CDPHE has been covering up the Prairie View Ranch water disaster since 2007. They chose to ignore consumer complaints for a full 10 years until 2017, and then took meaningless action against the violator. Their water is still black 7 years after the violation was issued, and CDPHE denies they had any knowledge of Prairie View until 2017, but they have records on it dating back to 2004.

This was a pretty vague reporting. What data was manipulated and how? How do the "improper" water analyses compare to the correct ones? I am in no way defending sloppy science, especially with respect to drinking water, however more details would have helped this story.

There was no public health risk, these reporters do not seem to have read any of the reports they were given. Copper levels were being misreported en mass by a single individual but were still within the acceptable range. "Data manipulation" means someone compared original data to the data reported, yet this report cannot provide even ON example of the type of manipulation ? Were data adjusted to show higher or lower levels ? Maybe thrown at and general average values used for everything ? No testing actually done, just samples assigned bogus values at random ? This is terrible journalism.

It appears that a chemist was misreporting the copper levels as being lower than they actually are, though the actual levels are still considered within the safe range. I'm curious why they didn't just enter the actual data.

So the sole piece of data provided in this story is a table of copper concentrations. All concentrations were well below the EPA limit of 1.3 mg/L. Copper is an essential mineral to human health. Thus the story provides no evidence of a threat to human health. All the story does is note a third-party review that proper quality control and quality assurance procedures were not met in the lab and that the state did not make this public quickly (maybe because there was not threat to human health?). Analytical chemistry procedures can be rather detailed, and if not properly adhered to put in question the accurate values of the results, not whether the results indicate a threat. For instance, if the result came out 0.5 mg/L when it should’ve been 0.65 mg/L, that is a serious QAQC issue. However, that does not mean the errors were so large that a public health threat existed. And sadly, the story provides no information, indicating whether that was the case or not.
