Thanks Vaughn for everything you've done for the communities of Depeche. I personally became this massive fan because my cousin listened to Happiest Girl in 1990 when I was only 4 years old. My older brother picked up on that track, but was more a fan of Sea of Sin, later on Personal Jesus, then the whole Violator album. I swear, my first memories of music are Clean, the pump mix of Personal Jesus and Sea of Sin. For that I shall forever remain grateful for having such an awesome cousin and brother, haha. :-)

In my opinion Dangerous could fit in between Sweetest Perfection and Personal Jesus. Further I think the best mix is the Sensual Mix even it´s 5.24 min long. The original mix of Dangerous consists a lot of a similar sound like in Halo. And I like the vibe and atmosphere of the Sensual Mix. The end of Sweetest Perfection fits into start of Dangerous and the end of Dangerous fits into the start of Personal Jesus.
@Sitchad13 жыл бұрын
Thanks for these series. Violator remains the best album I've heard soundwise but I never understood why a song like Dangerous was not included in the album.

Hi, Vaughn! An excellent video, as usual. Very instructive and perfectly explained. A few random thoughts: * Since MFTM, Violator and SOFAD are considered DM's creative peak (I personally would add SGR to that list), it should come as no surprise that the B-Sides recorded during that 6-year period (1987-1993) are excellent as well. In terms of darkness, Violator's B-Sides stand somewhere between MFTM's and SOFAD's and to me that's the perfect balance (though I enjoy "Stjärna" and "My joy" as well, to name just a few). * I think the intro to "Dangerous" shares some similarities with "The Robots" ' bassline (the one that starts after the bubbly sounds). It's something that popped up into my mind the first time I heard it and, since you're talking about DM's B-Sides of the Violator era (and "Dangerous" in particular), I thought I could mention it. BTW: It might be funny to do a mashup of both songs. It could be called "Dangerous Robots" :D. * Madonna's "Vogue" has TR-909 drums (and not TR-808) if I remember correctly. Cheers and stay safe, Vaughn!

Dangerous is one of their best songs, period.

I think Dangerous is one of DMs best songs from that period. It is fantastic and the best B-side ever ! By the way, the snare on Enjoy the silence was not an 808, but sounded more like a sampled 909-snare . . I remember I did not like that sound, and the fact that they used it, I thought that it was way to mainstream,, but I I got used to it :-) Good reviews, as allways Vaughn !

Dangerous is absolutely badass. It definitely would make a lovely 8th track slot on the album. Violator really could have been a 10 track album. It would’ve worked and I think nobody would’ve batted an eye for Dangerous making the cut. :) Just goes to show you the depth DM had in 89/90.

PJesus came out in August 1989, a long time before Violator. I suspect it was the B Side to PJ because it was the only other finished track they had at the time!! I also think because it's sooo strong and strange to US audiences in particular, which explains why it became best selling 12inch in Warner's history (not 7inch, like you say in your video. Not here to nit-pick, mate) Keep up the food work. Gonna watch the Pino upload in a bit, once my cat is under control.

The 'Violator' recordings sure did result with outstanding b-sides. I'm surprised there hasn't been a re-release with the nine original album tracks opening the CD, followed on by: 10. 'Memphisto', 11. 'Happiest Girl', 12. 'Dangerous', 13. 'Sibeling', 14. 'Kaleid', 15. 'Sea Of Sin' acting as an extended album play tracklist, as opposed to mere further listening. Depeche Mode's support team, from Daniel Miller, down through all of the Mute Liberation Technologies organisation, have done a great job of piecing together tracklists consistently and brilliantly. In fact, I believe their first mistake didn't happen until 2005's 'Playing The Angel' album, where track #6 should've been 'Newborn' - the 'A Pain That I'm Used To' b-side - in place of 'Macro'.
@rolanbc3 жыл бұрын
"Dangerous", "sea of sin" and "happiest girl" are great songs that could have been added to the album perfectly. And I would add to my all time dM b-sides list "My joy" and "fools", followed closely by "flexible" and "Oberkorn"

I read somewhere that 'Dangerous' was thought to be on the album but they couldn't finish it in time for the record. I don't know how much truth lies in there (especially because it was released on 'Personal Jesus' as the B-Side which was released before the album) but it would explain just how good this song is imo. I would put it after 'Sweetest Perfection', hard to explain why. It would fit there best. I also love 'Sibeling', I already read that you forgot it, no worries, errare humanum est! I generally really like DMs B-Sides, sometimes even more than album tracks. My favorite B-sides are: Dangerous, Fools, Pleasure little Treasure, Surrender, Newborn and Ghost.
@GeorgeDemin3 жыл бұрын
I think in case of Violator, there are no b-sides to add to the album, because the songs on the album are just platinum. With that being said, I strongly believe that on SOFAD “My Joy” should’ve made the album instead of “Get Right With Me”

The only b-side that could have had a natural placement in the original tracklist is "Happiest Girl" imo. Right between "PoT" and "Blue Dress". And if I am not mistaken they actually had plans to make it on the album. "Dangerous" is in my own top 3 of entire DM catalogue, but it's hard to find a spot for it on "Violator" without removing something else. "Sea Of Sin" shoud have been an off-album single. This song had a proper hit potential. It was later proved by The Bloodhound Gang who took "Sea Of Sin" motive to make their popular "The Ballad Of Chasy Lane".

Hey Vaughn... Again, great job. I do like this series on Violator. "The sonic perfection, to call my own" ;) lol My fav. B song is Dangerous (which I've covered by the way). If I had to choose one more song for Violator, that would be the one. It' a strong song and I think the mood is much more Violator a-like than the other B songs. As many said here, I would put it (on, please don't question why... lol) just between Sweetest Perfection and Personal Jesus. But I think Violator is perfect. No need to add more IMO. But it's a tricky challenge Vaughn, because after listening so much to this album, it's hard to imagine something else on it ;). Personally, I don't feel that Enjoy The Silence is "dated". I get your opinion, but I do believe the rest of the song is timeless. If you talk about drums sounds, I think that Policy Of Truth is much more "dated". That electro drums sounds like the 90's techno IMHO. May be we have a debate here ;) lol. Take care.

Dangerous (Sensual Mix) is a masterpiece but I could see why is wasn’t included on Violator. As opposed to “My Joy” which definitely should have been put on Faith & Devotion and place right after “ Mercy In You” on the album. They also should have taken out “Judas” and “Get Right With Me” and put them as b-sides making that album only a nine song release which would have cemented it as a absolute masterpiece.

And also Memphesto showcased perfectly the album sound ambience of that whole album in general I especially liked the live versions of Memphesto as I loved the changes they did to the song live so broody and dark especially how they used it in the beginning of these live shows just like they did 101 live with Pimpf Dangerous wouldn't in my opinion fit seamlessly continuation with the track listing even though it's a solid song Yet hindsight, Memphesto was in a way included in the album during the interim between songs which was just perfect

Talk about going backwards badum-ptss. Memphisto - for some reason I'm thinking: Mickey Mouse - The Sorcerer's Apprentice, when he causes *FLOOD* badum-ptss...

Dangerous absolutely should have been on the album. It's pretty much my favorite DM song ever. Where would I place it on Violator? Either after World In My Eyes or after Personal Jesus.

I think dangerous would have fit on black celebration 😉

Dangerous sonically fits between Policy of Truth and Blue Dress... but it may be taboo to have three upbeat songs in a row (Enjoy The Silence, Policy of Truth & Dangerous). All the B-Sides are great but, they sound like they need more work to become an album track.

Do you hear the similarity between sea of sin and Lilian, too ? 🤔 ... My 10. Violator Song would be Dangerous. Its so great to hear Dangerous live at a Forced to Mode Concert 🖤🌹

I think the song Dangerous didn't make it to the album because it was similar to Stripped. The group, realizing this similarity, did not dare to put it in the album.

I think Violator was titled as such because they violated their own rule of "not using the same sound twice" or sampling from other recordings. The Enjoy The Silence beat sampled the house tracks popular during that time, if my memory is correct, from an Inner City track. World In My Eyes has some sounds similar to early Karftwerk. So maybe Flood encouraged being a Violator? 😉 I believe Black Celebration and Music For The Masses are better albums and a more accurate representation of the core Depeche Mode sound. I'm not saying Violator is bad, It is still in my Top 5 DM albums.

Kaleid served well as the intro to the World Violation shows. Great bass line and vocoder fx. Also like the remix a lot.

Dangerous is by far my favorite but I did love Sea of Sin and Happiest Girl also. It speaks of how great the album is by the bands ability to leave them off the album. I personally believe Dangerous could have been a single! I would have put Dangerous in the 8th position after Policy of Truth and before Blue Dress!
