Newsnight has spoken to two of the 17 convicted offenders deported to Jamaica on 10 February. Between them they leave behind five young children in the UK. Subscribe to our channel here: goo.gl/31Q53F
The British government deported 17 convicted offenders to Jamaica on Monday. Newsnight has spoken to two of them.
Rayan Crawford arrived in the UK aged 12. He was convicted for Burglary in 2017 and served 12 months of a prison sentence of 2 years and 6 months.
On 27 January, 10 officials detained him at his house.
A leaked report into the scandal, revealed by Newsnight last week, recommended that the UK stop deporting people who had arrived in the UK as children or reserve deportation for the most serious cases.
Under both of these tests it would be unlikely that Rayan Crawford would be eligible for deportation.
Rupert Smith came to the UK aged 13. He was convicted in 2016 after pleading guilty to attacking a man with a wrench and received a 15-month sentence.
He says he has “had his life taken away”.
A Home Office spokesman said, “we make no apology whatsoever for seeking to remove dangerous foreign criminals.”
James Clayton reports.

The funny thing, is how proud they feel to be Jamaicans in the UK. How they claim Jamaica is better than the UK and how tough they feel while living in London. Once the deportation letter comes, they start crying and heartbroken. Same goes for Africans.

@@brownlawgirl I don't fully agree with Reehan's opinion but his point reads that not that all foreigners are criminals but that if you migrate, you should respect the country you're in. Surely that is a positive i.e. respecting the place you move into? Sir the UK did not GIVE him a home ...they likely BEGGED his parents or grandparents to come there to help them build.their.economy and turned around and left him without citizen ship after the age of needing the Jamaicans to do their dirty work had passed. These people owe you nothing just that crime is always wrong and since they knew how unfair the policies were they should have towed the line rather than cause mayhem.in the society...but please do not say they provided....they provided nothing that wasn't earned fair and square ..if not by the criminal then by his parents

miles lawrence Absolute rubbish! You’ve just put up a pile of excuses for a lack of motivation and discipline. I was brought up in what would be regarded today as worse than poverty. In slum housing, with one cold water tap, you had to eat what was put on the table or nothing else. I didn’t get to taste a burger till I was almost twenty. We had respect for our neighbours, and stealing off them never entered our heads. This man came to the U.K. at twelve years of age, he’s had 23 years to make something of himself, as many, many others have. I had a work colleague that came from Africa with very little, he started out as a labourer, simply tidying the workshop, he got interested and involved in Engineering. Twenty years later he has his own business. He did this also having to support his brothers wife and children, which is their tradition, when a brother passes away. Rayan Crawford was an habitual thief, this reflects in firstly the statement “burglary crimes” that’s plural, more than one crime. The sentence also, 24 months, he served 12, so the last 12 months would have been probationary. For a first offence the sentence would not have 2 years. Looking at his Facebook profile, it seems he was more interested in hitting on one woman after another. Not exactly family man material is he? Don’t give me the crap about “environments, job prospects etc” He was his own problem, and the bigger problem is people like you whom makes excuses at every turn and bend for ‘wasters’

Single motherhood and the welfare system is huge issue as well and when you take away a whole income from a family simply because a person who came to this country when they were a child made a mistake , it just becomes an ongoing cycle. When a child comes this country and grows up here , they feel like citizens , they don’t understand that they are here on the condition they behave, I think children who came to the UK age 15 and under should be able to have the same rights as naturalized offenders.

My gran got up one night to go downstairs to get something to drink. In the kitchen she found the window was wide open (it had been lifted out of its slidings then shifted across - the police later said it was a known problem with those kinda windows). She was still half asleep and wondered what my grandad was doing messing about with the window in the middle of the night. Then she heard movement behind her, and the front door was opened. She just caught sight of the back of a figure as he disappeared into the night. The burglar had been disturbed, so had only taken a few things (including old family war medals - insurance people were really helpful, but he had problems because he wasn't sure what had been taken and didnt want to get into trouble claiming for something that wasn't stolen. So he didnt claim on many things). The intruder had gone round the house and lifted everything he was gonna take and placed it on the floor ready. My grandad was probably more shook up than my gran. He kinda saw it like anything could've happened to her while he was asleep. They both felt very vulnerable after that. He had locks installed on all the windows. And for many months afterwards he would get up in the night and go round checking all the windows. And of course, any imagined sound at night means he's walking around in the dark with his torch (you can imagine the fear). He now doesn't even have the back door unlocked in the summer during the day. Let alone left open. And leaving the house is now always a bit traumatic, because all the windows and doors have to be checked several times. We have to watch him do it, to witness that its done. Thats a terrible shock for an old couple. To not feel safe in your own home. Its not 'just' burglary. Its way more than just taking things. There are victims. So I really don't care if this guy, or other such criminals feel deportation is terrible. Unlike my grandparents, he deserved what he got.

Further, I’d like to know what can induce an educated adult (like yourself) to believe that Britain stop slavery! Do you thing william Wilberforce one day woke up, rocked up to the parliament with his mighty pen and with the stroke of his mighty pen just stop multi- billion pound industry? Obviously, according to you, abolition of slavery has nothing to do with resistance and the fact that oppressed people didn’t enjoy being enslaved and oppressed. Have you ever herd of Haitian revolution? Or Jamaican resistance? That is what was a driving force of the abolition of slavery. I suggest, you expanded you knowledge and understanding of the world by reading... if you interested, I’ll be more than happy to share couple of books with you!

I feel for this young man having to be forced to return. However, going to a foreign country do your best to obey and comply with the law. Do not obtain victims to your crime. Also, as soon as I became an adult and in allegiance to my new country, I became a citizen. @@reemie786 that isis happens with folks who were born in UK. You think a non UK born citizen won't have their citizenship revoked on a lesser offence? Of course not. I heard of a guy who had his passport revoked because he borrowed it to someone to illegally work.

So are you saying what the Nazi did was OK. a lot of you forget the natural order of this earth 🌍 we all exist on, an order, of which none of you hold any position of power over.
