This is a recipe that was passed on to me by a friend's grandmother. It is a recipe that she made up during the depression for a Jewish family that she cooked for and that is how she named it. Grandma gave me the recipe just before she passed because she knew how much I loved it and told me it had never been given to anyone else. I decided to share it so it doesn't disappear when I am gone.

@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 I've been meaning to make this salad ever since you posted it. I finally did Sunday. I made half a batch 2 days ago. Fit perfectly I'm ball wide mouth 2 quart jar. I am now eating it. It is absolutely fantastic. Simple ingredients, but the combination goes so well together. Thanks so much for sharing.

My grandparents went through the Holocaust and those that were able to leave and somehow find 'safe' places, came up with amazing recipes... everything was used. absolutely no waste because food was an issue. either it didn't exist or we couldn't afford it. to this day, I still make apple jam and I still save the peels and apple cores in a bag in the freezer. With that we make a different kind of jam, we make pectin as well. same goes for all the root vegetables that we peel. we make vegetable broth. I am very familiar with this recipe and if you want to make it a bit more fancy, or a bit more rich, you can add sultanas or raisins. Just a bit. It's like little jewels inside the salad. If pomegranates are in season, you can also use a bit. Something we also use is the white long radish (not sure what they are called in English because I associate radishes with the red ones you've used) but they are really cheap and along with potatoes and carrots, they are the base for plenty of soups.

Paradiso Perduto I believe you are referring to daikon radish. The golden raisins are a brilliant addition! As well as the pomegranate in wintertime!

Interesting. My mother made this and she did so because her mother made it. I come from a half Ashkenasy, half Sephardi background. My Grandmother was Ashkenasy and they called it Russian or Winter salad. If there were no Radishes then a small amount of Horseradish would be added. Sometimes Beetroot ( red beet I think you call it in the states but always a Vinaigrette type dressing but maybe with mustard powder added since often served wit yesterdays salt beef. When made with the beetroot in it you got a pink tinge to everything. Actually I believe it to be more typically Polish rather than Russian. Maybe sometimes in a salad bowl it would be garnish with sliced eggs. Thanks for reawakekening memories of my younger days.

@@redtobertshateshandles where's THAT recipe? As I've said above, I've got a huge garden planted for people who loose their jobs, they'll still have food available if they're around the Central Texas area. I hope to be able to go to Ireland for 10 days in June, to see how to get the US to clean up the dairy cows? I'll take the info to USDA commissioner Sonny Purdue. I've already messaged TX Ag commissioner Sid Miller so he knows too.

Please, people of all ethnicity and heritage, (did I say that properly?) kindly show this man/woman some decent respect for sharing something you would never have been privileged to, otherwise. It is a gift far more precious than gold and could easily have gone with him/her. The mere fact that he/she shared it with you speaks volumes as to the magnitude of his/her heart and caring nature. Thank you for this. I made a half batch to test. Didn't have garlic powder so I put finely chopped cooked garlic in the mix. I used olive oil and 2 tablespoons of sugar. No radishes. Yummy yum yum! My husband was well pleased😊. The next batch is made with sunflower oil and 3 tablespoons of sugar. It has 4 spring onions, half a big white onion, half of yellow/green/red peppers along with your other ingredients. It looks and smells devine. Every time my husband goes to the fridge, "Is it ready yet?". I only made it yesterday😀 Thank you from both of us.

Good video, my mom had an almost identical salad recipe . She called it “The Claremont Salad” named for The Claremont Diner in New Jersey. Landmark diner sadly no longer in business. My mom would make this as a side for family gatherings about a week before. We kept in fridge 72 hrs minimum before serving . You’re right it gets better with age. About 10 days in it would start to spoil, but the jar was almost always practically empty.

Dawn Wells using Jew over Jewish is a dog whistle to idiots. It’s like using a mildly derogatory name for people from Mexico before “taco.” But, given the age of the original recipe, likely the woman meant no harm, and it was likely local wording.

Thank you so much for sharing! I will definitely make this...reminds me a little of one of my husband’s favorite salads. It comes from my Mom who got it from my grandmother. It is much simpler than yours but very good. I mix one peeled & sliced cucumber with one thinly sliced sweet onion in bowl. Add salt & pepper to taste. Then mix in equal amounts apple cider vinegar & water...enough just to cover veggies. Cover bowl & chill about an hour before serving with a slotted spoon. Frugal & simple but yummy. Thanks again.

Very similar to coleslaw I make, but I will try this one too. One little tip for making stuff that needs to be marinated- I use a Ziploc freezer bag. You can keep flipping it over to keep the marinade from just sitting in the bottom.

I made this tonight with vegetables mostly from our local farmer's market. I made the following adjustments: I used i large green pepper and four petite yellow and red peppers. I only added half of the red onion and 3/4 of the sweet onion since my family is not crazy about onions.I used 10 TBS of sugar, 3 cucumbers, and increased vinegar to 2 cups. I debated spending the extra money for Heinz vinegar but I"m so glad I did because it had a much milder flavor than what I had on hand. I chopped my veggies rather than slice. So good!

Unemployed Redneck Hillbilly Creations Times don't need to be tough to create a recipe with a multitude of veggies/ingredients. Homemakers across the globe, on a daily basis, gather whatever is left of this or that and combine it into a brand new dish for a meal for their family or self. Your grandmother's salad can be "tweaked" with green onions, peas, napa cabbage, etc etc and even topped with tomatoes just before serving..... it's a versatile dish. Some of the best recipes come from the Depression Era and families who know how to combine and stretch a few flavorful ingredients to feed a large number of hungry people. Have you considered recreating other recipes of your grandmother and posting them as a video series? No doubt they will be a huge success! Thanks for the recipe!
