One of my favorite Lamenter moments is the time they had to solo a Space Hulk that just by going nearby it drove people, astartes, literally anyone absolutely off the walls. The only chapter that was immune was the Lamenters and ultimately they alone were able to destroy this Space Hulk, but an Inquisitor then accused them of heresy for not destroying a massive space hulk that drove half a planet mad fast enough... The Badab story is a wild one if I've ever seen... I'll never forget when a sun was used to break a space siege fun times...

Yeah, a space hulk that drove people insane with a massive terror field and the Lamenters can endure because they are so beaten down already. And they did everything against the hulk. While others only used longest range space weapons, because anything else would risk them going insane. The Lamenters charged the whole thing, send all the boarding parties they could to rip up generators and whatever they could find, *while* their ships blasted the hulk with every weapon available. So while their own people were inside they still shot everything at it, just so they could do the most damage. The Lamenters are so extremely competent, because they can still win despite everything.

Then the inquisitors who were there chastised the Lamenters and essentially told them they didn’t do enough. Basically instead of „Thx for stopping this getting even worse“ they said „Fuck you, your best was not good enough by a planet width. You are lucky you don’t get punished for incompetence.“ Then they left. Just another spit into the Lamenters‘ face and just another reason why they stuck with the Astral Claws who actually treated them like equals.

I believe the chapter you’re talking about is the Blood ravens. (I could be wrong, it’s been a minute since I read about them) But, that “cure” isn’t a cure. It’s a lie & a trap under the guise of a contract. One of their old chapter masters mistakenly (it really was) made a deal with what he thought was an angel of sanguinius but it was really Kairos Fateweaver. Ultimately the deal was that, the blood ravens wouldn’t fall for the black rage (that was the “cure”), but if one, just one, ever did, the blood ravens chapter would be damned & under the control of tzeentch forever. They never really mentioned why tzeentch wants that particular chapter (maybe it’s their name) but…I don’t think we need a proper reason for why chaos in general wants something. It’s chaos after all.

For Me, The Lamenters embody a few different concepts, but the ones on the forefront are Optimism, Emotional Intelligence, and a simultaneous profoundly deep relationship with Grief & Hope. Idk, Reading what I could of them, and listening to Vox in The Void's narrations of fanmade stories for them, I fell in love quickly. The duality of a borderlining naive hopefulness and a remarkably mature handle on their emotions just leads to a wonderful character design. So happy to see this video.

To be fair to the astral claws, they were tasked with protecting this bit of space with definitely not enough ressources to do so and requested reinforcements multiple times. They took the matter into their own hands and built up their forces. Plus the rival sector, to which the tithe would have mostly gone to, was in direct conflict with them.

So, a few things Canadians did during WW1. 1. Took no prisoners - during raids and attacks, they would kill soldiers that have surrendered or were already wounded. 2. Free Grenades - Canadian soldiers would toss food rations to the German trenches. The Germans who were starving at the time would grab and ask for more. The Canadians then toss grenades. 3. Gas. Lots of gas attacks. If Canadians could use it, they would use it as their first option. 4. Brutal Savages - The Germans were afraid of the Canadians and would prefer anyone else to fight. Something about them being very efficient in charging at machine gun entrenched positions with flamethrowers and grenades. Said machine gun position are likely not to live. And if they Canadians fail at the 1st charge, they send in the second to do the same.

I am of the belief that contrary, the Lamenters are incredibly lucky. They're a glass half empty or a glass half full kind of story. To me though, everything that has happened to them has happened to other chapters before and many, many, many other chapters have not made it out. Like the Fire Hawks (I think), they were lost in the warp. Were they ever found? Nope. At best they're now the Legion of the Damned, at worst they were literally torn apart by daemons. In the Badab War there were 4 chapters that partook on the side of the secessionists, one of them was forced into being renegades, the Mantis Warriors got a taste of the Carcharodons Astra, all 3 of the remaining went on penitent crusades. I definitely attribute most bad things happening to them as them just biting off more than they can chew. As a working theory, I think their uncharacteristic sorrow as marines has to do with this. Where as other Blood Angels successors have Sanguinius still with them, in the form of the Black Rage, they don't enjoy the same spiritual connection with their father as their brother chapters do. They've been showered off from that brotherhood in the blood and from their father and so because of that they're always melancholic and because of that they're left with the feeling of hopelessness Blood Angels had after the Black Rage subsided at the siege of Terra and now they're always out to prove something. Essentially a suicidal chapter with an extraordinary will and passion to endure

So, yes - WW1 Canadians were basically the nightlords. The Geneva convention was basically the world going "Canada is scary - please so i can deal with the trauma". No prisoners, experts in raiding trenches in the middle of the night, and several times we would toss food rations to build a clump of troops over weeks in the other trench just to have the last meal be a bag of nades and probably rusty nails. Then we invented the creeping barrage which must have sounded completely insane at the time. You get on Canada's bad side, the true brutality comes out - forged in a country that is commonly frozen or scorching hot, and the very environment itself wants you dead. When we are told to go to a war, that's what i imagine bleeds into every soldier - dirty tactics, survival instinct, and a morbid sense of humour that combines into true monsters. One of the main reasons i stay out of the military - I'm not ready to see that side of me yet

I really want a Daemonuclaba episode from you guys because I know you ACTUALLY read the source material. WesHammer recently did a video on it and I think shined a light on the subject. For those uneducated on how it became a staple of W40K cult fiction, Luetin did a deep dive covering Dead Sky, Black Sun(the book it comes from) and really laid out the gruesomeness in horrifying detail. The issue is, Luetin doesn’t read it in the same tone as the book. After his video about 200 creators did videos on it having never read the book and only ever knowing what they know from the giant game of telephone between creators. Yes, it’s gnarly. But the whole book is. I’m the same way The Evil Dead is gnarly. It’s purposely over the top and ridiculous in a very 90’s tongue in cheek way. There is no edginess for the sake of being edgy. There is no underlying gender subtext. The book is written like a bloodier version of He Man. It’s hilariously over the top on purpose. So I am VERY excited to see Isyander dissect it because I think he’ll pick up how it was written and do it justice. Also, the daemonculaba is one chapter of the book. That’s it. You can skip it and miss very little. People should check their sources. And read the book. It’s actually one of my favorites

The Lamenters got it raw, spikey, and unlubricated, solidly up into their four corners of contact, for at least a couple thousand years in the setting. It has often been heart-wrenching to read about their struggle. I am convinced that the fate of many chapters who we could view as Reasonable Marines is to get ultra-boned. I prefer it not to be the case and would ease up on them a bit if I were the Grand Panjandrum of Official Lore at GW, but I am just part of the audience.

In fairness to the Lamenters on the whole Badab taxes thing - That was something of an overly reductive description of the situation. For more context, the Lamenters were one of several chapters assigned to keep this "independent resource extraction zone" safe from Orks, pirates, etc. It was also right next to the Eye of Terror's smaller but much older brother called the Maelstrom. Let me emphasize this part, this area was considered by the Administratum as independent and not fully part of the Imperium. The Astartes started to cut back on resource exports in order to build up PDF forces to help keep the sector safe. Technically speaking, this was completely within their rights as their mission statement said they were given authorization to use any and all resources of the area in any way they saw fit to keep it safe. So, as far as most Astartes chapters were concerned, the chapters of the Maelstrom Warders were 100% within their Emperor given privileges here.
