Polecat, the "grate thing" on the back of your truck is know as a headache rack. Its use when pulling vehicles so that if the chain snaps and flys up it doesnt come through the back window and "give you a headache"

The back window cover is called a Headache Rack/Headache Bar (from what I recall). I believe it's so that if something in the back of the truck slides forward during a sudden braking event, it won't crash through the back window and into your skull causing a "headache". This is all to my understanding of it anyway. See it quite often on work trucks.
