Documentation of Australian bush medicines is of utmost importance to the preservation of this disappearing and invaluable knowledge. This collaboration between the Yaegl Aboriginal community in northern New South Wales (NSW), Australia and Macquarie University, demonstrates an effective means of preserving and adding value to this information.
The University has worked closely with Yaegl elders to identify ways that their communities can gain real benefit from the partnership. This includes an education program using science activities to provide leadership skills and pathways for further education for Aboriginal high school students.
In recognising Indigenous people's relationship to and aspirations for country, these Caring for our Country videos recognize that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's knowledge about land and sea shouldn't be overlooked but celebrated and used to care for our environment.
