this is the Der alte Dessauer but i took the footage from the film The Enemy Below and extended it to make the full song hope you like it :)
To you, my friend, and you, my friend, and all of us together;
Here's a toast to life and to laughter and song.
Good beer, my friend, good cheer, my friend, through every kind of weather;
Make the welkin ring as we sing loud and strong.
Fill up the flowing steins again with foam on every lip;
We'll give a skol and shout "Jawohl!" in lasting fellowship.
And when we eye a Lorelei with captivating ways,
May we drink to love all our Livelong days.
Jawohl! Jawohl!

We sang this after we boarded the U-505 in Chicago, the tour guide thought we were nuts. Submariners are all the same regardless of what flag you served under.

The Enemy Below ranks with the best of the American produced WWII movies. The scene at the end where Jurgen's and Mitchum's characters meet each other face to face after they'd been trying to kill each other is heavy with respect rather than hatred.

Balance of Terror was the episode. The actor who portrayed the Romulan commander was Mark Lenard who later played Spock's father Sarek. I missed the first run because television wasn't convenient where I was at the time.

@@andyl9740 ...that is one of my favorite episodes... ...I had occasion to meet Mark Leonard at a charity premier of the first Star Trek motion picture, and asked him about why he did the episode. One of the greatestt ww2 movies of all time. I was 8 years old when I first saw this movie and I love it to this day. I'm 68 years old and it shows the respect one has for an enemy that had honor and duty to his country, This is shown when they saluted one another. The end on the stern of the destroyer is a classic. "I didn't know, next time I won't throw u the rope". I think u will". What class.

I watched this film nearly 50 years ago when I was 13. What a wonderful film! No political messages or the usual, vile anti-German propaganda. All of them, Americans and Germans, were brave men during their best. Robert Mitchum and Curd Jurgens performances were brilliant. The song reflects the tremendous patriotism and idealism of the German sailors. Out of nearly 40.000 submariners, 28.000 died in combat during WW2. They had the highest casualty rate (75%) of the German Armed Forces.

As the movie DAS BOOT states correctly , 40,000 men served in U-BOATS. only 10,000 returned safe. 30,000 dead. US U-boats (submarines) were very successful against the Japanese in world war 2 and had pinned their ships to just the coast line in the final 6 months of the war. Japan was stubborn and would not surrender , causing more and more death among its people.

US submariners did the same thing. They weren’t bloodthirsty. They didn’t enjoy killing. They simply had a job to do and had the right kind of guts and brains to be able to do it well. Any joy they had was simply a joy of accomplishing their job and living another day, helping to bring the war to an end so they could go home. Having a good boat helped. But all submariners were simply hunters. Their prey was shipping. The goal: kill ships. Sink them, as quickly and efficiently as possible. The way to do that was with powerful, high-explosive torpedoes. A spread of them that would leave the prey with little chance of escape. Unfortunately, that was very deadly to sailors on the boats. That’s war. Likewise, destroyers and destroyer escorts had a job to sink submarines as rapidly and efficiently as possible. Which was very unhealthy for the submariners. Many times torpedos blasted ships so vigorously and sank them so fast there were few survivors. And they couldn’t hang around to help survivors. They couldn’t afford to. A submarine commander’s job was to sink ships and never be detected. A single submarine on patrol didn’t have a friend in the world. To surface ships, every submarine was an enemy, as there was no time or good way to ask if they were a good periscope or a bad periscope. And therefore, every surface ship was an enemy. Never let anyone see you, was the rule they had to live by. Getting to within torpedo range was very risky. Like hunting large game animals with a bow and arrow...maybe with Rambo’s explosive-tipped arrows. If you missed, you might be faced with trying to escape a charging rhino. Not healthy. You could be up a tree and hoping the rhino can’t break the tree down. Takes nerve. As well, hunting a submarine with a destroyer might be something like trying to kill a scorpion with a steak knife. You’d prefer to have a long stick.

If you are talking about the Old Milwaukee beer commercials where there are Germans on an airline singing a song about Old Milwaukee and commenting that they would “never have the courage to name a beer ‘Old Munich’…”, yes I remember it. The song is similar to this but shorter and not the same song. I grew up in Chicago’s North Shore in the 1960s. The major “local” beers were Old Milwaukee, Hamms, Pabst Blue Ribbon, and Old Style beer. For many decades Budweiser was driven nuts by an inability to dominate the Chicago Area pub beer market as it did in other cities. Old Style Beer and the others above would clobber them in sales.

@Jack the Gestapo I read that in the Indian ocean a Japanese submarine had sunk a ship that was carrying troops.The destroyers didn't stop to rescue the survivors but started to launch depth charges killing more survivors.They finally sank the submarine.If i am not wrong it was IJN submarine I-27.

The Hunt For Red October echoes this scene as Ramius (Sean Connery)'s crew sings the Soviet Anthem as they disappear into the depths, and the American listen, mystified. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4jOfaKFq9Jlj9E

Did we all forget that those U Boats were sinking convoys destined for the UK?That the 2nd front couldnt be launched until the U Boats had been beaten?I like this film,but overplays the "brothers in arms" aspect.Im sure Mitchums character would really have done his best to kill the krauts.
