I've loved this film since I first saw it in the last 70's. The production is on a lever of quality and respect for the work, given the terrible stagings that seem to be the vogue, I doubt if we shall ever see their likes again. Kozub is wonderful as is everybody else. I can hardly express my love for this opera in words. I can easily see how it appealed and influenced the young Richard Wagner, who was to transform opera completely.

@IAMDRMERVRENBARRON9 жыл бұрын
jkircher314 Hellsing is an over the top series of Novels (and Later Animated series, Both a hurried one that got split off from the main story because the novels weren't written fast enough, Much like the Game of Thrones series, and Later a revised animated series based entirely on the novels) based around Vampires, Hunting Vampires, The Protestant and Catholic church, and Illuminating the night sky with the burning embers of Europe. It's bad, but, in that weird area of, It's so bad, it's good, but not so far that it's "So bad it's worse", that it gets a cult following.In short, try reading it online, The story's a big shonky, But the art is nice and it's a good tacky pulpy read. The reason it's connected this opera is because of the singing of a certain character named Rip Van Winkle. who enjoys singing it, and it was used partially as the soundtrack to parts of the OVE animated series.

I completely agree. It is funny to see how the musicians, especially in the case of baroque musique, look for an "archeological" study of the instruments, performance habits etc of the past, whereas stage directors seem to find the more distant from the original intentions of the authors of the librettos the better.

@@bathtubbarracuda2581 I'm not well-versed in demonology, but perhaps either Weber or whoever's in charge of this iteration decided to take on a different interpretation (that Samiel is a full-blown demon; that Samiel in Der Freischutz is not the same character as Samael in traditional demonology; etc).
@EinFremderAusElea11 жыл бұрын
This production is surprisingly good in the depiction of evil. When Kaspar sings of Bacchus, it's like that moment in Trainspotting, when that blond guy is told that heroin is better than sex. And Samiel stands aloof as man grovels ever deeper, choosing to be a worm in return for having what cannot be had, the ultimate mockery of those, who don't understand that. It's happening on a large scale.

If anyone has read the book 'Ring Resounding' by John Culshaw, about the recording of Solti's Ring Cycle, he refers to someone he just calls 'Our Siegfried'. He wanted this tenor for the role of Siegfried because he was a great singer, but he was also a bit of a lazy dope who couldn't learn the role no matter how hard they tried, so he ended up being replaced by Wolfgang Windgassen. It later came out that 'Our Siegfried' was Ernst Kozub.

Kozub was in failing health at the time, Which he kept to himself. It might have played a factor in his inability to learn the role at the quick pace Decca wanted him to. Kozub died age 47 in 1971.

It was Kozub who was hardly infailing health since he lived ten more years and performed much in that period. It was his laziness and stupidity that threw him off the Siegfried. The Decca team tried to help him learn the part and even Hans Hotter tried to help but they just ran out of time. A shame really since he had the voice

Fantastic performances, costumes and set design. Why don't they show the Freischütz like this at opera houses anymore?
@michsturge11 жыл бұрын
This is probably the best Freischutz video of all. Kozub, Mathis, Krause and Frick are equal to the best; Saunders is perhaps not quite on that level, but she's good nevertheless. The only competition is the video of the reopening of the Dresden Semperoper in 1984 or 1985 with a great cast and conductor. Reiner Goldberg is the Max and he's in top form.

I COMPLETELY agree with Natty Preme ! We all should stop going to opera as long as stage directors' dictature will continue

sincerely, thanks for the suggestion, but one can only buy something if one has money. So i still wish the uploader had included the english subtitles

@@victor7480 I am trying to improve my elementary German, just so that i can watch German opera without needing to keep checking the libretto. Very much worth the effort!

It seems to stand between Beethoven and Wagner. Weber imitates one and influences the other. I still say that Wagner is the greatest: Parsifal! My God!

I’m watching this working initially for an opera history class. The discussion is on Webern and the use of dialogue. I hint a little bit of admirable jealousy from Wagner. Are there subtitles in English anyone?

It´s only the same style. But melodicwise there is no connection.

Dear Mr jkircher, let me congratulate to your collection. May I suggest to you a beautiful hungarian opera to insert, that is Erkel Ferenc's Hunyadi László. It is from the early XIX. century, and as good as any Donizetti or Rossini "number". You will enjoy it, I am sure. It can be found on You Tube, unfortunately without E. subtitles, but the story is simple and one can read it in Boyden's book on operas. Best wishes: Oem Pet
