Nice to see a old flight movie .. Few things went wrong here .. i fly myself (glider pilot) and alwais read every thing i see about flying. Jochem was a very good deflexian shooter ! And a bit a loner .. He was send to afrika because he alwais went alone over the chanel and the LW didnt want that, so they send him to Afrika. There he flew with even more succes and often goes up alone and shot more English planes ! This is very hard to do .( i also fly Il2 and Clifs and DCS ) and i never have more then 2 kills ! (pc simulation) One time the comander above Jochem wanted tha he flew the newer Model 109 i believe a G model 109 and Jochem did not want to do it .. Bu at last they made him and on his first flight his engine give up.. exact what Jochem feared ! he bailed and hit the tail secion and died ..parachute did not open.. That was the story for real.. as far i know.. greets ACG Peet

Actually a G-2/Trop killed Marseille. Prone to mechanical issues, the G-2/Trop did what the Allies couldn't. Most of the 109's in the movie were courtesy of the Spanish Air Force and were actually HA-1112's (which look a lot like 109 Emils).

As there were very few actual original 109 airframes flying in 1957 (when the film was made) the film makers had to use (when showing real planes) the composite (built under licence) Spanish Buchon which used Merlin engines and thus they had incorrect lower engine cowlings (that were not incorporated on the original Messerschmit version), because the original Daimler-Benz engines types were impossible to find in the 50's. Its interesting that to retain continuity the film makers also used models of the Buchons in the action scenes.

I like this film. However, I feel that the ‘Afrika’ cuff title on the uniforms is wrong. Marseille was killed in action in September of 1942. The Afrika cuff title wasn’t established until January of 1943. Bearing in mind that the campaign ended in May of 1943, not many of these awards had actually made their way to the African theatre. This award was also worn above the left tunic cuff. There was, however, a Luftwaffe version of the ‘Afrikakorps’ cuff title which was worn above the right tunic cuff, but I don’t think this is the one being worn in the film.

Ironically the same way sports and athletics were designed to train hunters and protectors, Team sports were invented bit to train soldiers even decide disputes without killing each other. Well, well!!. I had absolutely no idea that the German film industry made war films this close to the ending of the second world war!!. I'd always thought that there were no German war movies prior to the excellent "Das Boot". I'm absolutely amazed!!.

I wasn't born yet, but my mother and father served in some capacity and also lost brothers in the conflict, and when we saw something in the movies would usually say something like, "our side killed innocent people too"....there's a channel called HISTORY HUSTLE that might be a better place to leave this kind of comment...also enjoy War stories with Mark Felton...he tends to tell it from a neutral perspective..see the Lincolna incident....MAKE LOVE NOT WAR!

@@lordemed1 No, but the poster was incorrect. Europeans in large numbers and several European nations actively supported Germany. There was a strong anti-communist and Anti-Semitic fervor at the time that attracted them to each other.
