The gates at Elvaston Castle are called The Golden Gates 'They were reputed to have been removed as spoils of war by Napoleon from a Royal Palace in Madrid and taken by him to Versailles for display. It was after Napoleons defeat in 1819 that the third Earl had them shipped to England....with stone pillars faced with Chellaston alabaster and topped with eighteenth century statues depicting Jason and the Golden Fleece and Hercules and the Nemean Lion.' That small building near the end of the walk through was used as the prison. There is a ford across the Derwent at Ambaston.

Well you know your stuff, I did know they were called the golden gates but that's about it, the building at the start of the video, which is in the grounds of Elvaston I believe is a Moorish Temple built as a summer house for the Earl to drink tea from

ive walked from derby centre along the river towards elvaston park and wondered if the castle is much further from there

Elvaston Castle is only about 4 miles from the city of Derby
