Derbyshire Portway Part 3

The Derbyshire Portway is a Long Distance Footpath, that starts in Nottinghamshire and then crosses the county border into Derbyshire, the route then goes through Derbyshire’s Erewash area, across the Amber Valley, continuing through Derby Dales as it enters the Peak District National Park. The route is 4000 years old which makes it one of the oldest trails in the UK. It starts at the Hemlock Stone a sandstone outcrop believed to be used as an altar for the Druids and wanders through Derbyshire passing many landscape features and locations before reaching Mam Tor and it summit where an ancient Iron Age Fortress once stood. In total the Portway is 48 miles in length.
Day 3 of the Portway:
Last night we stayed at the campsite behind ‘The Miners Standard Inn’ near Winster, today we continue on the Limestone Way first towards Elton as we pass the disused Portway Mine. Continuing along the country lane we reach the track on our right, that takes up to Cratcliffe Rocks where the Hermits cave is and at brow of the hill stands Robin Hood Stride. Passing the Stride we follow the footpath towards Alport, where on our right stands the stone circle of ‘Nine Stones Close’ and a few fields further on the left is the castle ring near to Harthill Moor Farm. Onwards we take the country lane to the quint hamlet of Alport, passing the River Bradford and old travellers cave shelters as we follow Dark Lane towards Bakewell. As we pass Ditch Cliff on our left we follow the footpath passing the school and onto Crowhill Lane and to the main road of the A6, then follow the footpath into village of Ashford in the Water. Then onto Pennyuck Lane and up to Monsal Head, then onto our first busy road of the Portway the B6465 we continue on the road heading North for 2 miles (3.2km’s) to the hamlet of Wardlow where we take a left to White House Farm campsite our place of residence for the night.

@@AnthonyJohnson1 Until you mentioned it, I have never looked how far the Limestone Way was, I am surprised its that short, as when ever in the white peak you always seem to come across the path, think might have to do it myself sometime
