A sensational arrival in French music's landscape in the middle of the 80s, a totally new outfits style, new choreography (or rather a gesture), energetic and heady songs (kudos to her Italian composer Romano Musumara) ... She almost dethroned France Gall at the top of the charts with her first 2 albums. And then ... Nothing ... A controversial song and her career collapses ... Even if she continued to sing (she has more than 15 albums to her credit), the rest of her career is much more shy and confidential, even if she will explore completely different musical universes. Her hugest hit: "En rouge et noir" Funny video: "Sauvez-moi"

I was waiting for this reaction one day or another...jeanne Mas was the major female artist at the beginning of the 80s . She had 7 big hits, 2 n°1 ...she was the first female artist to be n°1 in singles chart and album chart, the forst woman to fill Bercy ( one of the majour concert room in Paris in 1989), she was THE icon of the 80s. But Mylene Farmer overpasses her and killed her carreer in a way. Jeanne Mas disappeared from the chart in 1989 when Mylene became more and more sucessful. However Jeanne Mas still continues to sing today and has recorded 16 albums in her carreer. She lives in USA now and is independent from the music industry from a long time and her success is quite confidential but she remained an icon of the 80s ans has still a basis of fan who are still following her( I'm one of them!! :) ) You can react to "Toute premiere fois" (1984) "coeur en stéreo" (1985) from her debut album with Johny, Johnny and ", "En rouge et noir" "L'enfant" and "Sauvez moi" from her second album in 1986 . It is the 80s at her best!!!

So good & pleasant to see how U loved that song. It is also one of my very fav' one of Jeanne Mas' répertoire. It always reminds me of my own youth then. I did love her very first single "Toute première fois" as well. "Johnny Johnny" & "Toute première fois" were 2 smash hits in 1984 & 1985 in several countries. When I hear "Johnny Johnny" I often remember an African pal from Gambia named Abby. She studied French Literature in Nantes... and was in love of this song. Good old memories. Thanks for the beauty of sweet nostagia U carry in our hearts Derek. Sometimes I would like to go back to the 80's when seeing how awful & tough our world is today. At that time I couldn't imagine that our future would be what it is nowadays. I was young expecting some better times, something with more freedom & individual respect. I was so naïve. Jeanne Mas was so ahead of her times then, sooo much artistically. Pretty sure that her first single "Toute première fois" could be a major hit again without being remixed or just very slightly. Don't U know that thanks to U & some others who react to old songs more young people enjoy listening to old French songs... & like it very much! Bravo for the good work!

The way you are exploring french 80's, you MUST listen to Catherine Lara's "La rockeuse de diamant". And Jakie Quartz "Juste une mise au point"... Also you MUST react to some early "rap"-like pop from early 80's, the fantastic hit from "Chagrin d'amour" (the "band") -> Chacun fait (c'qui lui plait) the track title... Very funky... The lyrics are about a night errand of some drunk "clubber" of that time.

For us French speaking guys, who grew up with that music, it's quite surprising and almost an honor to see you discovering all that great stuff with that much curiosity and motivation. Thanks for sharing your pleasure with us, really! Might be lil' ridiculous, but listen to Stephanie de Monaco. I wonder if you will like her. She was the Princess of Monaco and apparently liked to sing, despite not being an innate singer.. Anyway, Switzerland's watchin' U, Cheers young man!

Jeanne Mas was already there when some Mylène Farmer made her first appearance...;), they were kind of rivals, and not only hair color wise lol. Dereck, you must apply for the french citizenship now, it's no nice to see an american citizen plunging into the musical french culture with such enthusiasm ;D. Merci!

Pretty sure it's the same production team than Stéphanie de Monaco "Ouragan". Yep, just checked it, Romano Musumarra was pretty much the Italian "Stock-Aitken-Waterman" for French singers...
@GuilhemGatien3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dereck. This song is from the famous italian composer Romano Musumarra. He composed many many hits. For instance Stéphanie de Monaco's Hit, Comme un ouragan. Jeanne Mas lives in L.A !

Hi Dereck. Me encanta esta canción de Jeanne Mas. Es buenísima!! La melodía es perfecta, la harmonía increíble y los sonidos de los sintetizadores y la batería electrónica son geniales. It´s a super song of a french kind of Italo-disco song. Have you heard voyage voyage of desireless or boule de flipeur of corynne charby?? please listen to them. !

If you like 80-s sound, you should at least try Julie Pietri "Eve, lève toi".
@pascalmarfaing16903 жыл бұрын
Yes , it's really an eternal song , with an oriental + dance style. " Ève lève- toi " is the Julie Piétri's best single.

hi dereck! you have finally discovered jeanne mas: the star of the 80s, unforgettable! a dazzling success that lasted a few years until she decided to take a career break. it's not the official clip, it's a montage of several TV passages over several years. I remember that she stood out with her completely new look and her own body language. But what a singer ...
