DM is my favorite band of all time!!! You definitely need to hear Question of Lust, one of the great gems where Martin (who usually sings backing) sings lead. And of course, Strangelove is an absolute gem and iconic song of DM. If you're like a little more obscure, I love the dark themes in Halo.

Depeche Mode was a stadium filler in the 80's with plethora of hits. This was the proper start for the new line up with Alan Wilder who replaced Vince Clarke, Martin Gore becoming the main songwriter and Wilder the chief arranger being a trained pianist and flautist who also had experience as music studio assistant before joining DM. "Strangelove", "Shaking The Disease", "Enjoy The Silence", "Personal Jesus"....

I was 13 when Some Great Reward was published. My favourite band of the 80s, but in reality I was pleased growing up with the 80s music. Lucky to attend the 1990 Park West concert in Salt Lake City, which was resceduled to the basketball arena the next day, due to heavy rain the first day.

The long wooded reed instrument you are asking about is called a Shawm the smaller instrument is a Melodica by a company called Hohner and it is adding sounds like these and the Glockenspiel are what helped Depeche Mode stand above a lot of 80's synth bands the Melodica was also used by another great band New Order

in the 80s the DMs were the first musical group that managed to bring the use of synthesizers to the great world audience. In the video it seems that their music at the time was played with strange instruments, in reality they already used synthesizers.
