It's going to be played at my funeral for sure, not because it's drug related, but because of its beautiful vagueness. Both very melancholic and very uplifting. Bernards vocal delivery on this song is in my opinion his best ever. Finally left the shadow of Ian Curtis behind. The bass is sick. Thanks, man!

Pet Shop Boys love this song, as they stated in their first Annually book from 1989. They're mistakenly credited as remixers for this song, probably because Stephen Hague produced the song, he did a lot of early PSB work.

New Order ruled the dance floor in the alternative clubs in the 80's. And the music still sounds timeless. Other suggestions: Thieves Like Us, 1963, Touched By the Hand of God, Perfect Kiss, Shellshock, State of the Nation, Subculture. Whenever possible, I'd suggest checking out the 12" mixes of the songs, they are all spectacular!

@ohfour-seven62282 жыл бұрын
@@markpalmer8083 Alternative clubs are clubs that would play alternative/new wave music. On the OSU campus, Mr. Mustard was an alternative and some of the gay bars in town would have weeknights devoted to alternative music. New Order was extremely popular with the alternative crowds.

Being only seven on the original release, I would only discover this amazing song for the first time when watching the 'Bright Lights, Big City' movie on TV in 1993. The song just blew me away. It was only then in buying the '? - the best of new order' cassette compilation that my older brother would introduce me further to the band. The 'Substance' compilation that I borrowed off him was amazing.

Epic song. This is THE song that changed my musical taste for ever! I finally got to see New Order in 2021 at the O2 in London and they were mind blowing. I was too young to appreciate Blue Monday but so many You Tubers have reacted to that song. Try Bizarre Love Triangle, Vanishing Point, 1963 or my favourites Temptation and This Time of Night from the great Low-Life album. Great reaction btw 🥰

Regarding how the lyrics don't include the phrase "true faith," New Order was known for this in their early era. The titles often had nothing to do with the songs. Supposedly, they even switched some song titles around on purpose. For example, on their second album, the song "We All Stand" always seemed like it would make more sense with the title of the following track, "The Village."

When Ian Curtis passed away in 1980, Joy Division became New Order. This song was played steadily on 106.7 KROQ here in So Cal for about 4 - 5 years straight after it came out in 1987. Saw them play it live at Hollywood Bowl.

This is my favourite New Order song. 1987 was my absolute peak pop music fandom phase. My ultimate peak came when Pet Shop Boys’ Always On My Mind got to Christmas No.1 (a HUGE thing in the UK at the time). But I also knew Neil Tennant was a big New Order fan. This song was produced by Stephen Hague, who also produced and allegedly wrote part of Love Comes Quickly and converted the minor club hit of West End Girls into a global smash. You’re right. This is New Order’s catchiest song. I’ve never understood why catchy songs are derided. I love them, which is why I love True Faith, so many PSB songs & ABBA (& BeeGees). You probably know PSBs and New Order & Johnny Marr contributed to Electronic, a mixed up band, which was all right, but never as good as any of the individual bands, in my opinion.

New Order lyrics are often meaningless, but this one where we can assume Mr Sumner was trying to tell us something. (His autobio is an interesting read). One detail I remember: the drug in question is of course Ecstasy (which would still have been pure MDMA at the time, and a couple of years away from becoming fashionable). The full-length version has longer instrumental breaks including the modulating coda. Btw: In Britain we pronounce that name BER-nard.

I think of '80s music and videos as abstract art. Well, this is true of the best of the decade, anyway (New Wave and Alternative). The '80s had an unfair reputation for being shallow or maybe frivolous, and I remember New Wave getting a lot of scorn in the '90s and 2000s, once grunge came in. I think this misperception came more from "hair metal" songs and videos than anything else. Plus, I think a lot of the symbolism and deeper meanings of music was lost on the general public, as people were so focused on the interesting visuals of the videos. The music also sounded so amazingcatchy/unusual that people often didn't think much about the lyrical meanings. Those synth beats were quite hypnotic.
