The man in the beginning is German actor Udo Kier. He also appeared in the "Sex" book, and Madonna referred to him as "Lucifer" at this time. This video is a tribute to Andy Warhol, with Madonna's character inspired by Edie Sedgwick. “She looks familiar” - That’s actress Debi Mazar who you may know from tv shows like Entourage or Younger. Madonna and Debi have been friends since before they became famous and are still close friends now. Debi is also in Madonna’s Papa Don’t Preach, True Blue and Music video clips. Debi introduced Madonna to the gay ball scene in NYC which is the inspiration behind Vogue

At that time critics attacked this album and everyone was saying this was her worst album. After some years it's been reevaluated luckily. I think it's a quite good work. Ok not the best by Madonna, but a good album.

My favorite Madonna track, thanks for reacting to it- I totally agree to 6everything you said! The guy in the video is German actor Udo Kier. He is also in the “Bad Girl” Video, and he happens to come from the same region in Germany that I am from. In the late 90s, after having moved out of my parent’s house, my new roommate and I threw a massive party in our apartment. He was about 10 years older than me and knew a lot of people. One of them happened to be Udo Kier. I will never forget the expression on the faces of my friends from school that I had invited, with one of them telling me in complete awe “there is a Hollywood celebrity at your party?!”

I was in catholic boarding school in 5th grade with nuns and all and got the erotica cassette for Christmas because my mom and I loved Madonna. You were so on time with Madonna club days. I would see Madonna all the time in NYC nightclubs. Most at Sound Factory usually around 4 AM. She worked the crowd just as she does in this video ending up in Juniour Vasquez DJ Booth. Debi Mazar still M best friend is in the video. Also Warhol legend Holly Woodlawn. Great review. That slammin' flamenco break was...guess who...Madonna's idea. When she and Shep Pettibone were working on the track, she announced her plan to careen into a Spanish middle. Shep's response was (to the effect of), "I couldn't see the sense of shoving in 'La Isla Bonita' half way through this song...but, Madonna insisted, so it had to go in!" As usual, she was RIGHT! There is no damn way the song could have survived without it! Sheer masterpiece! BTW...the actress you thought was familiar (I think that's what you said) is Maddy's gal pal Debi Mazar. She also featured in the videos for 'Papa Don't Preach', 'True Blue' & 'Justify My Love'.

Before watching your video, I want to say that from this song, I get playfulness with the lyrics. I get a philosophical tone, like she’s remembering what her mother told her about life. I also get a hint of reference to one of her other songs by title. Same thing about her father. She’s inherited important advice from her parents.
