Soft Machine "Third" - brilliant music!

I remember when you first turned me onto Third, Dereck. I've been listening to that intro for Out-Bloody-Rageous for over 50 years now. That piano and organ intro and outro recorded in reverse. . . like you said, mind expanding. Nice tribute to the music and the band.

Back in the day, I never remember anyone cleaning their records and such. It was always drop and play and enjoy the music !! Today I'm cleaning my vinyls all the time, go figure, lol

Yet another fine video from the internet's greatest music nerd. I've been sick the last three weeks, so watching this made me feel better. Thank you Dereck, for all that you do.

The comment on Led Zeppelin was funny. Me and another guy at work used to make fun of the radio stations saying “ oh yeah, this is the station that plays ‘Stairway to Hotel Freebird’ “😂

Sad to hear about Mike Ratledge. Anyways, several years ago I was making an order for a vinyl LP (don't remember the title, I believe it was an original German Ariola copy of Sahara's For All the Clowns) on Discogs and got a surprise. You know how on occasions a seller would pad the LP your order with several other LPs, because the seller didn't have access to bubble wrap. Usually, those filler vinyl were titles missing the disc or standard thrift store LPs (like Johnny Mathis or Barry Manilow), but with my order one of the titles used to pad my order was Soft Machine's Third, both discs intact and plays fine! Unbelievable! I already have a copy I owned for many years.

Mike Ratledge was incredibly smart and articulate, but was never interested in talking to the media, so there aren't many records of him speaking. Yes, it was Jimi Hendrix who suggested adding the distortion pedal, and it transformed his playing, not least because he had to play continually to stop it screaming with feedback. Daevid Allen was a friend of William Burroughs, who gave permission to use the name of his novel for the group.

"Third" was actually released in 1970. I first bought a copy of this album 13 years after its release in 1983 while living in Washington DC. Definitely an eye-opener for me.

I knew that, kept saying 71.

That Goebells and Harth "Indiana Für Morgen" LP is excellent. I bought a copy from Chris Cutler's "Recommended Records" here in the UK in the early 80s. And the first Cassiber LP that they did with Chris Cutler is astounding.

Mike Ratledge was a unique keyboardist and he greatly influenced me. Sad news. It's great we have many live releases of Soft Machine with Mike's incredible playing. "Teeth" is a fun tune.

For my music, I run all my synths through a pedal chain and use distortion as a percussive burst in some of my Throbbing Gristle inspired material

The Gila cd you showed is reissued on vinyl - great music, like all you showcase. Mythos, is fantastic (the artwork reminds me of Victor Moscoso in the old Zap comix). German Oak, recorded in a WW2 bunker, is high weirdness and should be a prog stoner requirement. Do you have Baumstam? any way... These responses to the krautrock video you have offered are inspiring. I have dug out old treasures and spent the rent on new ones. Cheers, indeed!
