I got the opportunity to meet and see Damo Suzuki perform in Moon Club, Cardiff 2018. He signed my Damo Suzuki Jelly Planet album. An enigmatic performer who bent and arranged his vocals into mesmerising, beautiful, and haunting sounds that shouldn't be vocally possible, sort of like a human instrument. John Lydon's vocals on Metal Box always remind me of Damo's vocals on Tago Mago. An influential giant of music. R.I.P.

Never checked out Can until I watched this and then I listened to Future Days on Spotify last night and I went to my local record shop today and bought a copy on vinyl. Thankyou for introducing me Can, your passion about the band made me want to check them out so thankyou and of course RIP Damo.

Very sad to hear about Damo. He was incredibly courageous and positive, despite his tribulations with recurring cancer. Having gone through the existential shock of cancer treatment myself, I can only marvel at his indomitable spirit. I had the good fortune to meet him briefly after a gig in Dublin (supported by The Jimmy Cake, an excellent local band). He was kind and gracious, with an aura of humility and impish fun. I’ll be playing those three classic Can albums for a while. Everything comes and goes, so enjoy the good stuff while you can. Thanks for this heartfelt tribute to Damo. He sure was a shaman.

Damo was an incredibly original and vital frontman for an incredibly original and vital band. There are some musicians that cannot be imitated at all-----and both Can and Damo qualify under that umbrella! thanks for sharing Dereck!

Hello Dereck, thank you for this wonderful tribute and your thoughts. For me too they are one of the great, important bands and i feel fortunate to have seen them live in the UK many times. The first time was with Damo in 1973. I first heard them the year before,, aged 17 and i can also remember the time and place with my friends, and someone put Tago Mago on....it was wow! and i loved them onwards. Ege Bamyasi followed, i purchased all the releases as they came, and i have most of what you have in my collection. Future Days is a favourite, and that Damo period is when they peaked for me. Years later Damo Sound Carriers tour and he played with my son`s band(2007) It was an honour to meet him. As you say he was a Shaman, modest and a free spirit. Looking forward to the Paris concert with Damo being released this year. Peace to Kenji Damo Suzuki....

Nothing like Can. Truly unique and Damo fit perfectly into their experimental and improvised style. Hard to choose a favorite album. "Tago Mago" is essential.

Damo Suzuki's death was definitely one that came as a blow to me as well. He was a highly creative and innovative musician all the while with a very down-to-earth personality as I've seen in interviews. He will be missed.

(This is Steve Dinsdale writing ) Such a shame that Covid robbed you of the Damo experience. You would have been perfect, and I'm sure you had some great Sound Carriers lined up...or would have. I was lucky enough to play with Damo 6 times between 2004-2013. Each one was different, the first time was a dream come true as I'd been into the classic Can since I was 18 (1981) when the original version of Cannibalism on UA led me to each of their albums which I bought pretty much one after the other in the same week from the same shop (had my first job, still living at home, and money to buy records. I had to keep going back for more). I'd actually heard `Oh Yeah' on a radio show when I was 14, but didn't know what it was called only that it was by Can...and was hoping it might be on Cannibalism...it wasn't...but Mushroom was, and the explosion at the end led me to solve the mystery...I bought Tago Mago first. Oh Yeah remains my favourite to this day. What you say here about Damo riding with the music is absolutely spot on. He could turn a jam into something much more than a jam. He had a sensibility which brought the music into focus. Every time. And we as musicians, many times never having even met before, were inspired to do things we wouldn't have dreamed possible. As a person he was humble, polite and funny ! And ...if it wasn't for Damo I'd never have met Martin Archer. I know you're familiar with his work. I'd never have been drummer with Orchestra Of The Upper Atmosphere or Das Rad if it wasn't for the introduction that was made as Sound Carriers for one of Damo's gigs. I'm sure these connections were made all over the world, and that's his important legacy I think. And obviously those peerless Can albums ! kzbin.info/www/bejne/roSooqCeadqNhdE

Mark me down as one more person that you have turned onto Can. Just listened to Can for the first time today. The album Future Days sounds very modern, and I thought Radio Head were an original band but having just listen to Can I may now have to reconsider that opinion. Thanks Dereck.

Yep, the wheel of life keeps spinning. I remember when you announced on your channel that you were going to be playing with Damo. I actually had plans to come out from Ohio to see that happen. I totally get the issue of good and bad at the same time. The record i did with Bob shipped and I had a great gig on Friday. But at the same time, i have significant job worries that just came up. Take care, sir. Hopefully the ears quiet down for you. RIP and much respect Damo. You were a titan!

Love Can and hated hearing the news. Oddly Saw Delight is my favorite album they released but I agree that Future Days may be their best. My friend Bo here feels the same about missing the chance to play with Damo when that tour cancelled.

I can relate to your experience in your youth when one of your friends made fun of Can. I brought a Jimi Hendrix album to play for my 4th grade music class. My classmates ridiculed me. A schoolmates came up to me much later when no one was around and told me he thought my record was cool.
