@@Gibsonstandard67 I think Duane had skill in pitch with the slide. Although there is a comment by another member of the Dominos that Duane went high in pitch in places, if you listen to enough of his playing, you can hear the skill in his slow slurs between notes. You can hear it in the high slide parts here on this vid. Some notes may have been technically a bit off, but they still fit. Sometimes going a hair high adds tension.

Duane Allman and Eric Clapton were a match made in heaven when it came to this track and the whole album. Duane added something great to every session he played on. So sad he died so young. But he left us with so many great tracks to remind us of his genius.

One of my favorite songs ever, but the moral of the WHOLE THING is- You always want what you can’t have, and then if you should get it, it probably doesn’t work out in the long run anyway. Just human nature, I suppose.

Always loved the slide guitar on this song, but when I heard it a few years ago, and realised that Duane Allman was playing above the neck at the end of it, and also in between the pickups, it got me back into slide playing, because I had never tried that before. I think that Duane's playing up there is just one of those things that really adds to this song -- along with the tone of Eric's voice, and everything else. Thanks for posting this isolated track vid. You can really hear the guitars and vocals more clearly.

The title, "Layla", comes from the story "Layla and Majnun", written by a 12th-century Persian poet named Nizami Ganjavi. The story is about a mans unrequited love for a women. [ and the Majnun is the crazy guy, Clapton! ]

I've followed Eric for 50 years and seen him in concert almost hundred time. But THANK YOU SO MUCH for putting together the isolated tracks, the photos and the back story. I saw Bobby Whitlock up at Daryl’s House in upstate New York. Tiny tiny venue maybe fits 150 people. Great guy. So funny. After concert he stayed quite a while sitting around with a bunch of us and telling stories about the Layla sessions and his travels through the music world. Check Wiki for details. Oh yeah. The song he wrote completely by himself, “Thorn Tree in the Garden” and is right after Layla, was written for a dog he once owned and someone gave the dog away when Bobby was away. He simply said to us, “Hey love is love”. Thanks again. I'm going to watch your vid a few more times.

"Criteria Studios in North Miami Beach", I lived 2.1 miles from that studio from March 17, 1997-March 16, 2014 (17 years to the day). You'd be surprised who recorded there and all the hits. Also, Clapton's home in Golden Beach at 461 Ocean Blvd. Used to go by that place all the time. Clapton named an album after the street address there too. It was the album with the Marley classic on it, "I Shot The Sheriff". "Hotel California" that was recorded at Criteria Studios as well.

alot more than 2 tracks, at 35 seconds in you have already heard atleast 4 separate tracks and it grows from there, a couple duane guitar tracks, a couple eric guitar tracks, eric's lead vocal track, i'm counting 7 separate tracks! you can usually google the track info sheet for Layla and find xerox copies or even pics of the original they place in the vault box with the master tape, it charts out all 32 tracks, 16 front end, 16 back end, it tells you what is what in terms of the track listings. here you have the Rhythm Guitar, the Lead Melody, the Melody through the verse 1,2, and 3, the solo section, the solo section, two separate slide tracks actually, it toggles back and forth of what duane was doing first and then goes into eric's slide track before going into the acoustic track, dont forget the vocals, which is atleast a couple tracks, you get a little of eric's backups as well as hearing a little of bobby's, so actually more than 7 if you really count it up, more like 9-10 tracks featured here!
@bloeddorstigbeest Жыл бұрын
Technically speaking back then recordings werent't made on 32 tracks. 8-track having been introduced around 1968/1969, it is probable that rather than use separate tracks for each guitar part, Dowd made reduction mixes that combined several guitar parts on a single track. The original tracks behind those reduction mixes may still be around but the 1970 LP version must have been mixed from 8 tracks. Great to hear Eric and Duane, though.

@@bloeddorstigbeest layla was 16 tracks each end..the first half and the 2nd half which was recorded 3 weeks later. so yes every thing is truly isolated except for the lead in guitar during the chorus, aka the riff, its duane and eric together on one track

Everything except the piano coda was written by Clapton. Jim Gordon ripped off the piano coda practically note for note from Rita Coolidge's 1969 song "Time" and took credit for it. Gordon and Coolidge lived together for a time until he turned physically abusive toward her. The song "Time" was recorded in 1973 by Booker T Jones and his wife, Priscilla, who was Coolidge's sister. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3qtgX-ZrK2Cm9U

It's difficult to play a slide accurately above the neck (including in between the two pickups on a Gibson). :-) Up there you maybe have 4-5 mm between notes -- if that. Duane went a bit higher than scale on one note, but it still sounded cool. And for all we know, it may have been intended to go high, as it's like an overbend.
