i went to yankee stadium for the first time in june 2014 with my family, and always remembered that the yankees were playing the red sox that game. my grandfather (mom's dad), who was a HUGE yankees fan, came with us to this game. he was in and out of the hospital because he was sick, and we dragged him on this trip with us because this could've been one of the last times he could come to yankee stadium. even though i'm from miami, i was raised a red sox fan because of my mom, but when i saw derek jeter step up to the plate, i got chills. the crowd erupted like crazy. i remember turning to look at my dad and grandfather who both had the biggest smile on their faces. i lost my grandfather two years later at the beginning of october in 2016, yet i remember the smile on his face when derek jeter stepped up to bat. the last time i saw him was in the hospital for a quick visit before going to the marlins game on september 24th, 2016, which was nine days before he passed. i just wish i could have my grandfather back just one more time. this commercial made me cry. wow.

Even though I'm a Cardinals fan, I still have a ton of respect for Jeter, not just for what he accomplished on the field and playing for 20 years but staying with the same team his entire career. You just don't see that much anymore in pro sports. I went back home to STL to see a Cardinals-Yankees interleague game during his last season and was bummed the one game I went to he was not in the lineup, but he did come out during the 7th inning stretch and was given a standing ovation by the STL home crowd, to which he waved his Yankees cap. Very inspiring to see. He's a couple of months older than me and I'm envious he got to retire at 40 from a job he loved doing - must be the life!!!!

I've spent a lot of time in New York City. I wouldn't live there but it is without a doubt a special place. As soon as you get there, whether you're an athlete, a businessman or woman, politician, preacher, or like me a federal law enforcement officer on a temporary assignment there, it gives you a feeling like no other city. That feeling I get when I cross one of those bridges into Manhattan coming from either JFK, LGA or even NWK..... It is incredibly unique if you just take it all in. When that city is behind you and they support you, it is something to relish yet also humbling. And when you win for them they love you for life. And Derek Jeter is an example. I got to see him play at the old Yankee Stadium. It was incredible. Even the two Boston Ted Sox fans I sat next to couldn't bad mouth him.

In 2008 while workin for the first federal LE agency I worked for, I was in New York for the UNGA. I was fortunate enough to get to see in my opinion to of the most iconic and cleanest baseball players ever. (KGJ and Derek Jeter). It was an homer to see them both in one stadium. Jeter was tryin to break the most hits record at the old Yankee Stadium. I was on the second tier right behind home plate. KGJ struck out and Derek Jeter also went hitless. But the strangest thing happened. I sat next to a woman wearing a Red Sox hat. Even though the Yankees were playing the White Sox. It was crazy becaus eve she was teary eyed getting to watch Derek Jeter. Being from Memphis and never knowing how serious the Re2pect was for Derek Jeter it really sunk in when she was gettin emotional. Those two Red Sox fans tipping the hat said it all. I still have that ticket. Even though no history was made that night, I felt like I was apart of somethin special.
