This scene still sticks out in my mind as one of the most memorable death scenes ever... a main character shot dead with no epic music, no heroic deed, no witness sobbing his name... just a quick pop in the head, and then back to the action with the other characters. I remember chatting with a friend while watching this episode. Then suddenly stopping, looking at the tv... each other... the tv... "Did they just...?" "Is he...?" "...the HELL!?" A very bold decision by the writers, for sure!
@danielhicks48264 жыл бұрын
It really was as far as death scenes go was about as good as it gets,it was surprising, and genuinely realistic and plausible and shocking just random bad luck etc, I mean it sucked and was fricking brutal by the writers I mean just offed Riley and Charlie like 2 episode prior then to do that was just so fucked up,but technically and cinematically speaking very very well done and brutal and surprising.
@Hei_Darkfire3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'd argue that the death really didn't serve a narrative purpose. After a short grief, they end up just completely ignoring his death afterward. It was like they didn't know what to do with the character and just said "Fuck it, let's get rid of him". I don't mind the fact he died, I just wish his death served a purpose other than removing him from the story.
@husamstarxin46263 жыл бұрын
His death wasn't meant to be special because he was going to exist in the future when John goes there, in fact he met him at the very last scene. This wasn't supposed to be the last that we see of Derek, but of course the cancellation ruined all this.
@Sir_IsaaClarke2 жыл бұрын
Dereks death felt somewhat similar to how Kyle died in the first terminator film (might sound a bit far-fetched idk, but take it as you will.) They both died instantaneously, no god-like music nor any final words as you mentioned (although, I guess Kyle did manage to pull off a heroic deed as a result of his actions.) In the end they both got blasted and are dead, thats it. Both deaths are very memorable imo.
@pontifixmax Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Like his brother Kyle in 1984, Derek didn't actually exist in the present, so how their deaths are portrayed is treated as such. Plus, John's life is really the only important one.
@bunkeymunky4 жыл бұрын
11 years later and still one of the most memorable deaths in TV history. It just HAPPENS, no foreshadowing, nothing, not a word, just a fast shot and he's dead. There's no time for the characters or the audience to digest his death. "Keep moving."
@timernaut2 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed ! Derek is an amazing character on the show end how you said: "no time to digest" his death, and even believe that it had happened. This show is my favorite one since that time and I love to watch it again and again to notice things that I miss on my previous watching times.
@Steverino32211 жыл бұрын
This one was realistic and scary. Just goes to show just how much quicker a Terminator's core processing is than a human's brain. Derek had a fraction of a second to respond, the terminator already knew to shoot within a billionth of a second, hence the instant death.

This was a fantastic tv death... No heroic sacrifice, no goodbye, no tears.... it wasn't drawn out... He just walked in front of the barrel of a gun and died unceremoniously. Brilliant. But I suspect that they were ready to retcon it with time travel anyway...
@danielhicks48264 жыл бұрын
Well he is literally alive still as a boy regardless,but bottom line is that version is gone forever the one John got to know past year and half is gone forever even if another incarnation of his uncle is alive still ya know.so it still matters and is very tragic regardless of any time travel fixes ya know.Cause its not like they were gonna actually time travel to the day it happend and make sure he doesn't get shot like that or anything.
@Hei_Darkfire3 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that the death was pretty much worthless from a narrative standpoint. It was like they just didn't know what to do, so they wanted to remove him from the story. This death should have served a purpose since it was one of the main characters. The fact it happened just so casually and the series just sorta brushes past it shows that they just wanted him out of the story at that point as they barely even react to his death. The girl shows more respect for him being dead than they do, and the death doesn't even affect them at all. Sarah just loots the body and that's it.

That was the whole point; he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. No chance to say goodbye, or fight back, or heroically sacrifice himself. Just a completely random, senseless and unceremonious bullet to the head - which is what would likely happen in "real life" if one was to go up against a literal killing machine. I love how the show barely even acknowledged it either; in the end Derek Reese was just another anonymous corpse to bury. He died as he lived, and it was perfect.

I both love and hate this death, and not for the reasons you might think. It wasn't that I liked his character or anything, but more that it felt like this death served no narrative purpose. It was like they just ran out of ideas and decided to remove him from the story. Even the characters response to his death was lacking, where Sarah just loots the body and moves on. The kid shows more emotion than anyone at his death. I do like that the death shows just how dangerous their job is, and how it shows that not everyone gets a heroic sacrifice, but at the same time, narrative-wise, I'd argue this should have been done better.

@shadowreaver18512 жыл бұрын
It's so sad there never was a third season. Instead were just left with Derek eating a bullet and Joe Henry never fulfilling his destiny. It would have been interesting to see what became of the rebellion within Skynet and whether that would lead to a civil war with terminators siding with the resistance and fighting other terminators. It would also be interesting to see how the alternate timeline plays out where Derek is alive, Derek's Asian girlfriend is alive and Cameron is human. Would there eventually be another machine Cameron in the future or in the past? Will John Henry bring salvation to the human race and end the war of the machines? We probably will never know since they pulled the plug after just two seasons. And it's too bad because the tv series introduced some very interesting plot ideas and took the story in some new directions that were never explored in any of the movies that came afterward. So many good Scifi shows die because there just aren't enough scifi supporters to demand another season or a large enough viewership to ensure traditional episodes are made. One could always hope for another tv series reboot though.

But when this moment happened I was like ahhhhhh nah!! I was shocked he died he was a good main character and when I saw him come back when john time traveled I was like oh alright!! Now it was a clean kill and that Terminator was a pro at headshots or programmed to do that shit cause as you could see a machine/ terminator could overcome a human anyday and how accurate their kills could be without emotion and without giving us a second to react, shows you how machines really work

I, however, think John Henry's brother, who was the complete Myles Dyson code, will take over John Henrys body and CPU, thus starting Judgment Day. Sarah should've been looking for Cromarties body a long time ago.

I know - they're not like "shoot first, ask questions later". Their thing is "Terminate".

The way Derek Reese died was how Sarah Connor would have died on T3 but Linda Hamilton hated it she gets shot they stare for a few seconds and then they leave.

Dereck despite his awesome skills ran into an aimbot.

probably, "fun dose not compute" ever notice that they never say terminator during the show, aside from the previously-on and opening sequence...oh, and the finale

Death is dramatic in dramatic shows. What is dramatic about some guy being found dead in his appartment after two months? What is dramatic about some kid that gets run over by a car? What's so dramatic about some old lady that dies in her sleep? Ya gotta slap yourself in the face if you think for a second that everyone gets a loooooooooooooong death scene, because that is just retarded.

@christian7433560 Well, duh, ya can't expect the SFX people to get it all right. Also, how much time will they have to spend for a ten second shot?

That's what Derek gets for not telling the admins on a server that doesn't have respawns.

Well, that's because that was in a possible past of Derek. Doesn't change the fact that he will die in that mansion.

Cromartie (or was it Henry already?) is watching... movie reel, not some CCTV - shot from cameraman pov! And that death.. well, this is war, you know, nobody is obliged to warn you.

Derek Reese clearly states he hasn't seen John Connor in a while, which means he won't get many scenes with John, thus he can be reduced to a mere extra.

@codenamevengeance This WAS epic, you just seem to miss the epicness that is the death of Derek Reese.

Eh I guess we just have different opinions of it but it still was a great episode cause it made viewers remember that. None of there favorite characters were safe in the world of terminator. It would be nice to see a channel do a spin off of the Reese brothers they made them into one of the most interesting characters you want to know more about. there is allot to tell from them.

I dont remember that much about the whole alternate universes and everything but didnt Derek from Jesse's universe get captured and tortured by the machines? I dont think that Derek will be able to come back.
