The rest of the Sonic Team probably requested he go to the olympic games. He then refused, but then they started taunting him (Saying he was scared, etc.) and him, being the proud Hedgehog he is, obviously decided to prove them wrong.

There sure was a lot of controversy bringing the Olympics to the Mushroom Kingdom due to their censorship against anything that was against the mushroom monarchy but I think in the end they were able to host the games without a problem.
