Dull blades really are one of the main culprits for shaving irritation, which is why traditional wet shaving with a double edge razor blade is making a comeback, as not only does the razor only cut the hair at the skin level (and not below, as seen with 3+ blade razors) meaning it doesn't cause ingrown hairs, and due to the low price of the blades (typically $0.05 per blade) you can use a new blade every day while still spending a quarter of what you would spend on Gillette cartridges. hope this helps!

Best and by far the cheapest hack for me is just simple Vaseline. I wash my face with warm water/dove soap to soften the hair then lather a small amount of Vaseline to the area I am going to shave followed by my shave gel. I shave both with the grain and against the grain for a closer shave, it is a bit messy. However the blade glides perfectly and there isn’t much tug and pull.And when I tell you overtime the Vaseline has worked wonders on not getting so much irritation after. I also slaver it on after shaving and leave it. So basically Vaseline, Vaseline, Vaseline. Such a cheap alternative but very very effective for men with sensitive skin

Great general information............However; multiblade razors are one of the biggest reasons for these problems. For instance a five blade razor head, with each single pass it's the same as five pass's over the same area. You are better off to use a sharp single edge blade, they are so inexpensive you can use a new blade every couple of times.

I started shaving at 11; canned cream and two blade cartridge razor. At 12 for Christmas I received a gift of a Double edge Safety Razor, shaving mug with brush and shaving soap. Now at the age of 38, the only thing that has changed is Aftershave. My skin for whatever reason can't do splash Aftershaves anymore. Afta Original and Fresh Scent work really great. Price is good at $2 and change, contains Allantoin and other ingredients one can research.

I used to get extremely bad RB and bumps, I'm extremely fair skinned. I used to use a cartridge razor like in this video. A barber friend of mine recommended a straight razor, at first I thought "not a chance in hell". After dealing with my skin irritation over and over I finally started out on a shavette, and switched my foam over to shaving soap with brush, and instead of a aftershave splash I now use a balm. Here we are, over 20 years later with no irritation, it is a big transition and DE razors do the same I have found but a straight worked for me, everyone's different though, I just wish this video was out back then cause I just happened to have a barber pal lol.

The key takeaway is using a cleanser with ceramides and niacinamide post-shave. I use a very gentle scrub pre-shave, then lather up my cream using a brush and I will use either a safety razor or the Gillette SkinGuard. I shave in 4 passes: With the grain, across the grain, across the grain again (the other way), and then against the grain. By exfoliating and reducing as much stubble as possible, I can shave against the grain for a perfectly smooth finish. Finish up with the aforementioned Cleanser and moisturizer and you're good to go 👍

I Decided to stop going against the grain, and start using better products but I get lost on what to use. Only recently started using: C3 head wash to clean (feels like it's not cleaning well though) then Marlow shave cream with shea butter to shave my head, then I use headblade clear head as an aftershave, followed by palmer's cocoa butter as a moisturizer (then palmer's once more before bed, after washing again with C3 headwash). Do you think I'm using some wrong products and would you think your routine in this video could work better for my whole head? Also, how do you feel about an exfoliater a couple times a week? I found that shaving foam eventually creates a permanent sticky film on my blades, even after cleaning. I simply switched to lathering with plain non-oily liquid soap. Because it's soap, it naturally helps clear out the gaps between blades, each time I rinse the razor. Plus, there is no residue on the blades, and liquid soap is inexpensive. Is that bad for my skin?
@graycen62712 жыл бұрын
I think as long as you’re using a gentle soap (preferably one made for sensitive skin) then this seems fine. However, if you’re using a liquid hand soap I would immediately steer clear. Soap is usually extremely drying to the skin and if it’s heavily fragranced it may cause a lot of irritation. I imagine the Cera Ve Hydrating Cleanser Bar or other similar cleansing bars could work well. These sorts of products are actually soap free but have the appearance and consistency of a traditional bar soap. Hope this helped.

Dr. Sugai, thank you for the informational video! I did not realize that it was necessary to cleanse the face again after shaving. I do not typically use exfoliating cleansers, as they irritate my skin. I prefer leave-on products. I do, however, use a gentle cleanser like the one you mentioned here. How would you incorporate leave-on exfoliating products into this routine? For example, CeraVe SA cream, Paula’s Choice Liquid BHA, or The Inkey List PHA toner. Could this be applied after shaving if the BHA cleanser was not used beforehand? Would it be necessary to use the gentle cleanser before and after shaving? Please enlighten me.
@danielsugaimd4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew- thanks for watching and great question. It would be fine to apply the leave on product after shaving. Then okay to moisturize and sunscreen afterwards. If you have a problem with razor burn I think cleansing after the shave is necessary too. If not, cold water alone to rinse your shave gel off is fine. I also developed a hack of shaving with a foaming cleanser and that serves as a cleanse before and after. I can make a video on this later. Take care! 🙏🏼🤙
