How do Family Physicians in Canada expand their scope to include Dermatology? Is it a Fellowship Or Non-Royal College Training?

Many family doctors will do additional training courses in things like POCUS, dermatology, etc. There's a few options available but most are only a few weeks to months in length and do not grant you royal college certification as a dermatologist.

Hi Vidushan :) You definitely can but you would need to be accepted into medical school first. Nursing is an undergraduate program. In Canada, you do undergrad, then med school, then residency

dude, no derm is working 50 hours. wut?! its squarely in the 32-36 h/week range. Salary is also a bit higher especially in PP.

Hey Sassi are you a dermatologist - if so than please explain where in the stats provided the CMA was incorrect? :) If not then the best stats that we have to go off of are the official numbers used in this video directly from the CMA. Averages are listed on a national level and there may be different in certain provinces and for certain individuals Best

​@@nxtgenmdIt won't be incorrect per se, but those surveys have like a 10-15% response rate so you have to keep in mind it is probably not representative. Also, I looked at the 50 hour break down closely because like I said, no way, and if you look at the table you have, the direct patient care is 32 hours, maybe 38 if you add indirect which is more like it, everything else is fluff and will apply to some physicians and not others eg most private practice physicians are not doing research so it helps to actually dissect the work hours there. That salary number is also from 2017...in a survey with a 10% response rate. I am a derm resident. I have never worked 50 hours in residency even with call, definitely not working it after and having started looking for a full time job is how I know the 400k is incorrect unless you are in academia or in a super tight market. That said, this was still informative.

If you'd like to leave a separate comment highlighting your experience and the province where it's applicable, I can pin the comment so that people can get more info from your perspective. Regarding the 50 hour work week and breakdown, I actually did a 2 week derm elective in clerkship and showed the stats used in this video to the specialist (this was in Ontario). She agreed to both the hours worked (including administrative duties) and average pay but informed me of the potential to make more which is what I also included in the video... It's a similar story for family medicine, etc. where the potential to make more exceeds the average in a lot of provinces. But again, experiences will vary. Anyways, glad you still found it helpful and would love to hear more if you'd like to share. Congrats on almost being done :)

​@@nxtgenmd I would hope she is making much more for 50 hours a week (unless she is in academia which no one really does for the money and unfortunately has a lot of busy uncompensated work but is also a pretty small percentage of the derm physician workforce). I have offers now both in Canada and in the US, and I can tell you that if I was working 10 hours 5 days a week I will be making much more than that amount. No need to pin it, happy to answer questions directed at me as they come up. Anyway, all the best. enjoy your weekend!

@@dermresident could you please share your experiance of the pay in Ontario or BC including for salaried positions, from what I saw it's exactly what NXTgenMD showed very low billing around 400k in Ontario(it's public)with higher overhead 40% so the average post overhead is 240k thats like 180K US$ that's lower than an FM in the US!
