Was lucky enough to see this man play for the Mighty Hawks. I remember a game out at Windy Hill one Saturday afternoon and Essendon were giving us a bath. At half time I turned to my mum and pop and said I don't think we can win this game. (I think I may have been 13-14 years old at the time?) In the second half of the game Dermie put the whole side on his back and carried them to one of the most wonderful victories I've ever seen. He was just unbelievable that day (like most days he played to be honest). Love ya Derm, a hero of mine then and now. Go the Mighty Hawks!

Respect to Dermott. He is part of a dying breed. Someone who is honest and tells it like it is. Unlike most football media wankers who tow the AFL/Government line.
@har2349082343 ай бұрын
I'd like to say that's BS... but there's some truth in it. Only now there are media wankers who'll say anything for clicks - it doesn't matter if it is "how it is". I don't buy the toeing* of the AFL line. There's plenty of space for all to say whatever they want... any publicity is good publicity for the AFL.

Love Dermi. Commentates in a positive, constructive, animated way. Unlike the boring, negative, drip the modern T.V commentators drool. Dermi keeps footy and life in perspective. A gentlemen considering he's experienced some heavy life stuff.
@har2349082343 ай бұрын
If you're not old enough to remember him as a player, the Hawthorn teams of the 80s were awesome and he was top tier. His commentary these days might not be for everyone (your preference is yours) but 20 or so years ago he was trying to bring the average fan up to speed with the way the game was going. For a bloke who was an *elite* player who played on dominant teams, I've always respected that he'd look for positives in young players on very ordinary teams... giving hope to the fans of clubs at the bottom half of the ladder to keep pulling for their side when others would take the easy way of kicking them when they're down. Hated him as a player... everything about him was opposed to how I want to see the game played... but The Kid grew up. Brutally honest about some personal stuff... fair play.

i was never a fan of his commentary but i remember talking to this Welsh bloke who had only been in Australia for 3 months and he said he loved Brereton and said his explanation of the game was brilliant, especially to someone who had no idea of the game before landing in OZ. that's the best complement i recon

What a player, saw so many games back in the 80’s and Derm gave everything for his team and teammates, he put his body on the line on every occasion. Love him and so proud of what he’s accomplished throughout his career. Go Hawks.

Used to chat with Dermott as a kid as my dad used to take me to training at Glenferrie during rhe week. Years later as a young adult Dermott was a 'Publicity Personality' for Area nightclub in Croydon and, because he remembered me from my youth, he'd always throw me a few drink cards which always helped with the 'talent'. Best shirt front Dernie ever gave was in the final against Essendon at Waverley on Paul VanDerHaar. I was sitting about 20 rows back and you could hear the slap of body on body when he hit him and the crunch of VanDerHaars bones when his body hit the turf. Awesome footy!! Five flags in 11 years at the Hawks, 8 grand finals...thats one hell of a successful team. We would've beaten the Pies for the 1990 flag if it wasn't for the injuries we had. Anyhow...he was out and out my favourite player as a kid and he could turn a game in five minutes with his superior body work on opponents, ball judgement and his kicking, field kicking and kicking for goal, was elite. One of the best players to play the game. Hands down.
@royboy45713 ай бұрын
I like to remember Dermie, for his undoubted talent, as a great football, particularly when he attacked the ball. Unfortunately his shirt fronts were in may cases, a cowards act, something that today, would never be tolerated. But, I grew up in that era, it was always known as a dogs act, even back then. Probably says more about you than Dermie.

I am so glad that I can appreciate the great insight that Brereton has because I know that some people can't. I think he gives some of the best analysis watching football, usually it's the details that most other people wouldn't think of. Other commentators tend to just say very obvious stuff. But Derm is a genuinely nice and kind human being, and I wish him all the best

I don't have a single best footballer I've ever seen, but if I was told, you can only pick one player of any team, as your favourite and/or the best, it's this bloke. I follow Collingwood and what he did in the '89 GF and that 1 year at Collingwood was phenomenal among a litany of other achievements. He has his flaws and admits it. Should be made a legend of the Hawthorn Football Club and I've emailed them to suggest he should be. One of the few players who took his personality out onto the ground and wasn't held back or regimented by team rules.

Top bloke, top footballer. Love it, how he doesn't seem to be acting when on camera. I'm an Eagles fan and always admire smart football people who tells it how it is. I've always wished an end of season show could happen with Dermi, Paul Roos and Peter Bell reviewing every team and their thoughts on what would be most beneficial for each club across the comp in their opinions. It would be so entertaining.

I'm a South Australian so "hating" Dermie is part of my DNA. BUT, I always remember attending a State game at Football Park and Dermie and Martin Leslie went toe to toe and he came off second best with plenty of facial blood. As he ran off the ground the crowd were giving him a huge send off but his head never bowed. I really respected that about Dermie and have never forgotten it. He could hand it out but never complained when it was his turn to cop one whether it was deserved or not. That's what I call a man's man.
