I have no idea how Derren planted a list of words in James' head, but the rest is pretty straightforward (I think). Derren eats a real piece of glass. That's practice and making sure you absolutely reduce glass to powder before swallowing. But James eats a piece of sugar that Derren has planted on the napkin right after he pulled it towards him. Right here: 4:55. That piece is actually a little opaque. The piece probably has a thin coating to seal the sugar taste for some short time. The apple is meant to hide the sugar flavor while chewing. The water dissolves the sharp edges of the sugar. Hence the pause before swallowing. The genius part is the questioning, which, not so coincidentally, starts right after James starts chewing. The thing is, lying requires full concentration and doesn't allow for multi-tasking...like chewing. That still leaves open, how Derren planted a limited set of words in James' head. No idea, and a little bit creepy, to be honest.

Yeah if you listen carefully you can hear it drop into the pile of glass. Classic misdirection getting everyone to focus on the piece that James is holding. As for "planting" words in James' head, Derren has done a tv episode years ago and one thing he focused on was advertising and marketing and how it's used to influence people. In the episode he gets a couple of advertisers to design a logo for him but what they don't know is that he's already influenced them through subliminal messaging to design a logo almost identical to one he was thinking of. Here's the video for anyone who's interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4K7lmR5pNCKp7M
@sloma1113 жыл бұрын
@Erik Thank You. Finally someone thinking! The guessing trick was hipnosis, and its not only sugar thats eadible and reassambles glass. Im sure. Though it might been sugar and apple to cover the taste. This trick would be impossible if he used random bulb with different curvature than the "sugar piece" he planted.

I think he has to do the bulb and glass trick just to get Corden into another state since it would be difficult to do a trick on a specific person. It was shown during the apocalypse episode audition scene that there are people who are immune/difficult to hypnotize.

Lol I love all the Americans who are saying he swapped it for sugar glass when he didn't even touch it. He's been making people eat glass for ages, he even explains how it works!!
@myNEONCITY6 жыл бұрын
Eating glass isn't safe though. Especially not lightbulbs that can contain mercury and other dangerous elements on the inner side of the glass. Chewing real glass can permanently damage the enamel on your teeth and cut the inside of your mouth. If this trick is real than he is incredibly irresponsible for giving tainted glass to people to possibly crack a tooth on, or he slips in a piece of sugar glass at some point and gives that piece to them. My vote is it's fake, most of these mentalist people incorporate these tangible "magic" tricks along with their psychological conditioning tricks.
@heinyml6 жыл бұрын
What do you mean he didn't touch it? He literally picks it up himself from the table and places it in James mouth. That is the entire reason he has James eat a piece of apple so that he doesn't realize the sweetness of the sugar glass.
@emfromthechi6 жыл бұрын
@@heinyml right, because he wont taste it before eating the apple right? Lmao so dumb. If it was sugar glass he would have known, as he ate it before the apple. So this makes no sense. He gave him the apple so he would chew the glass more naturally and have the glass mix with the apple, creating an applesauce like mix in his mouth. A lot easier to swallow that way for the inexperienced.
@heinyml6 жыл бұрын
@@emfromthechi He gave him the apple almost immediately. Why would he have tasted the sugar glass before? You think he was rubbing his tongue around what he thinks is real glass? You only say that it "helps" chew the glass because that's what he tells you to believe. It makes no sense to eat a sweet piece of apple unless he is hiding the taste of the sugar glass
@emfromthechi6 жыл бұрын
@@heinyml So when you take a shot of vodka and chase it down with a coke, you dont taste the vodka at all? Your argument is totally illogical. He wouldve tasted sugar if it was sugar glass. Why would he need to cover it up after the fact.

If you travel to Asia, or my country to be specific, eating glass, metal or coconut shell as performance is common. Traditional performance. And there's no such thing as sugar glass lol. People should really travel far. It's easier judging if you dont witness yourself. Sometimes it's not a sin to just enjoy the show without trying to solve the mystery.

Vicki Dewi couldn’t agree more. Except that there is such thing as sugar glass lol. They have bottles entirely made out of sugar; they’re called breakaway bottles and they use them on tv and films as a prop used mostly for fight scenes
@ConnorEtch6 жыл бұрын
There is diffinetely a thing called sugar glass, it's used by actors and performers a like, also used as edible wine glasses when you have parties. No clean up required. Every time you see a bottle smashed on screen over someones body, that's more than likely sugar glass.
@anggrekbulan1006 жыл бұрын
connor etchells Oh Sorry, you misunderstood. I mean there's no sugar glass used in traditional performance in my country.

Vicki Dewi there will most definitely be sugar glass in your country and used by many performers, but yeah traditional it is done with real glass and takes a while to master. Just like with many dangerous performance such as sword swallowing or fire breathing
