Derrick Lewis made his UFC debut at UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne on April 19, 2014, against Jack May and won via first round TKO. The following summer (July 6) he secured his second UFC win as he knocked out Guto Inocente in the first round. Lewis then went on to lose his third fight against Matt Mitrione on September 5, 2014 via first round KO.
Lewis came back strong at UFC 184 beating Ruan Potts via second round TKO. Unfortunately after this he suffered another loss to Shawn Jordan at UFC Fight Night 68. However, after this loss Lewis went on a six fight win streak and secured wins over Viktor Pešta (first round TKO, October 3, 2015), Damian Grabowski (first round TKO, February 6, 2016), Gabriel Gonzaga (first round KO, April 10, 2016), Roy Nelson (split decisionon, July 7, 2016), Shamil Abdurakhimov (third round TKO, December 9, 2016) and Travis Browne (second round KO, February 19, 2017).
Lewis' next loss came against Mark Hunt on June 11, 2017, in the main event at UFC Fight Night 110. He lost by TKO in the fourth round, and fter the loss, during his post-fight interview, Lewis announced that he was likely retiring from mixed martial arts. Later that month, Lewis revealed that he ultimately decided to continue fighting.
Derrick Lewis then managed to beat three oponents in a row; Marcin Tybura (third round TKO, February 18, 2018), Francis Ngannou (unanimous decision, July 7, UFC 226 ** The fight itself was heavily criticized for the lack of action in both fighters with Lewis only landing 20 strikes, and Ngannou landing 11) and Alexander Volkov (third round KO/TKO, October 6, 2018, UFC 229). After being behind on the judges' scorecards and visibly hurt multiple times, Lewis knocked Volkov down and subsequently finished the fight with follow up punches in the closing seconds of the bout. This win earned him the Performance of the Night award.
Lewis then faced Daniel Cormier for UFC Heavyweight Championship on November 3, 2018, at UFC 230. He lost the fight by rear-naked choke in the second round, marking the first time he's been submitted in a professional MMA fight. After signing a new contract with the UFC, Lewis went on to lose via second round TKO to Junior Dos Santos on March 9, 2019. This did not stop The Black Beast. He has now worked his way back to the top of the heavyweight division with four consecutive wins against Blagoy Ivanov (split decision, November 2, 2019, UFC 244), Ilir Latifi (unanimous decision, February 8, 2020, UFC 247), Aleksei Oleinik (second round TKO, August 8, 2020) and Curtin Blaydes (second round KO, February 20, 2021.
With his knockout win over Blaydes, Lewis is now tied with Vitor Belfort for the most knockouts in UFC history regardless of weight division, with 12 altogether.
Derrick Lewis is now expected to face Ciryl Gane on August 7, 2021 at UFC 265 for the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship. The winner of this fight will be next in line to challenge current champion Francis Ngannou for the heavyweight title. Ngannou became the new champion when he beat Stipe Miocic at UFC 261 earlier this year.
Cyril Gane is coming off a dominant five round decision win over Alexander Volkov. The frenchman has rocketed up the heavyweight division and is riding a nine-fight unbeaten win streak including victories over former champion Junior Dos Santos and rising challenger Jairzinho Rozenstruik.
