The crazy part is players always say half the battle is being in the right situation. They kept making OJ Mayo play the 2 when the man was a Gilbert Arenas type 1. His scoring package was so elite that NBA coaches just wanted him to concentrate on scoring in half court sets. So instead of going downhill with the ball and making reads while also having the ball in his hands everytime- he is coming off screens or being in iso situations against 6’6 & 6’7 NBA elite dudes. And he STILL balled out rookie season. But the man was 6’3-6’4. But u put him at the point and suddenly he is a big point guard causing havoc & creating opportunity for others. And then the off the court stuff just derailed his career. Its crazy to think how K Love wouldve been on that grizzlies team & Mayo couldve been at Minnesota at the point if not traded for each other. The Grizzlies & later the Bucks tried to make him into an instant offense Crawford Lou Will type of player and OJ’s game was always a cerebral slow burn type of game. Dude was a technician. Yes he was older in high school (lol) but he hit the ground running as a 21 yr old rookie. He didnt look out of place or shell shocked. No team would let him play his natural position. It was crazy. Even Tim Grover was telling teams predraft that OJ was a 1. OJ wanted to play the 1!

In 4th grade i was on a 9-10 year old basketball team. I led the league in scoring with 21 points per game. I was 5-9 at the time. Going into 5th grade, i thought i was the man but in our first game we played against a team with a new kid named Ovinton (OJ). That MF scored 40 in the first half. Left and never played another game in that league. I assume because we sucked. Good news is i averaged 25 that season.
