It might be due to my love of Russian cinema but Dersu Uzala has been my favourite Kurosawa film since I've seen it and one of my favourite overall films.

There about ten Akira Kurosawa directed movies in my Blu-Ray collection. Maybe soon there will be eleven. Never really heard of this movie until this video. Thank You.

The snow storm scene I think can basically only be felt by someone who experienced something similar. The scene of two men fighting for survival against an indiffrent force of nature that would wipe them out if they don't defeat their fear and work fast and coherent is so primal in it's essence.

One small point I liked about the movie is how in the wilderness you can see how the Captain's beard grew over time and then he shaved it off when he went back home. Edit: I've watched your War and Peace video before but couldn't remember your channel. Glad I watched Dersu Uzala today so I can finally sub :)

What a blessing the Australian Blu- Ray release of this masterpiece is. With Krzysztof Kieslowski, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and Asghar Farhardi, Kurosawa is my favourite director in world cinema, the list of his masterpieces run into double figures. I have always felt Dersu Uzala was one of his neglected classics, with the exception of "Ran" very few of his films in colour seem to enjoy the esteem of his legendary works in black and white. I rate "Dersu Uzala" alongside "Kagemusha" as a miraculous film in terms of its visual splendour and intimate humanity, a quality that makes Kurosawa the most empathetic of auteur Directors. Thank you for this thoughtful and revealing overview of a wonderful film by a unique Director.

Kurosawa has so many great films and Dersu Uzala is certainly one of his neglected classics. I am glad you mentioned Kagemusha, as it's my personal favourite Kurosawa film. I feel it doesn't get enough love these days, with it often being overshadowed by Ran. In my opinion it deserves to be right up there with Ran if not higher, I plan on making a video about Kagemusha in the future.

@@VoidVolken I look forward to seeing that video, I hold "Kagemushsa" before "Ran" in my affection, with "High and Low" I consider it his most underrated film, the opening alone is to die for, the photography is beyond mesmerising, and I love Sinichiro Ikebe`s soundtrack, which I purchased after seeing the film, his score to "Dreams" is also so much a part of that films fabric and texture. Your doing a great job with these videos, they provide a fascinating insight and perspective into the works you highlight. In my humble opinion no director deserves a retrospective overview of his work more than Kurosawa. My heartfelt thanks.

Excellent exegesis. Very intelligent, articulate and enlightening. A lot crammed into less than fifteen minutes and my own regret is that you couldn't go to a half hour. If I may add a small grace note, Kurosawa was known to be a great admirer of the work and visual poetry of John Ford, going so far as wearing dark glasses on the set just as Pappy always did due to weak eyes. At the end, when Arseniev puts Dersu's walking stick on his grave and pauses a moment, it is strikingly similar to the end of Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" when Ranse Stoddard (James Stewart) puts the cactus plant on the pauper's coffin of the forgotten Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). Both Stoddard and Arseniev do so in tribute to men who were once tigers but now forgotten and their worlds quickly disappearing under the grinding heel of progress. Just my own subjective thoughts.

Do not believe one can speak of 'the best film I've ever seen'. Believe one can only speak of the ten best films or more. Even so, this film is close to being the best film I've ever seen. Have lost count of how many times I've seen it. Agree with everything said here, except for the New Age 'back-to-nature' narrative, which is IMHO an unwarranted imposition. And to say there is not character development is, of course, a nonsense, since the film is about the development of a friendship. The absence of music is also one of the best features of the film. What a shame it would have been to have more music.

@VoidVolken5 ай бұрын
I recommend starting off small, go watch films you will certainly like. Then branch off into other films that may be slightly outside of your comfort zone. Alternatively you could find a foreign director, watch one of his or her films and if you like it, watch the other films they have done. It's what I did with Kurosawa and its how I ended up watching Dersu Uzala.
