I am learning Mahler 2 right now... can't get enough of this video!

The first four symphonies are called the Wunderhorn symphonies, because he quotes themes from his Des Knaben Wunderhorn song cycle. Urlicht is Symphony 2 Mvt 4, Des Antonius he put into Mvt 3... In the Fourth symphony he uses another song for the soprano in the final movement.

...Trying to find the Geharer/Boulez recording, BUT, what a pleasure this is! Immortal Bernstein delicately bringing out the silky, sinuous strings of a peerless orchestra and Accompanying a fine and stylish singer... Mahler is doubtless delighted. x

What an orchestra…I could not believe at first that it was conducted by Bernstein. Quite egregious to his name.

This is a whole tone higher than the video by Walter Berry and Bernstein. I think it may be too high for Groenroos' voice.

Very good singing technique, good interpretation. Impression, probably he studied with advanced Fischer-Dieskau, it comes close to the style of F.-D. in late years. May be a little too few different "colours" (comp. to Gerhaher) and little too much "bow-wowing" at the cost of intonation accuracy. - And it is a damned difficult piece of music... Very interesting!

Beautiful orchestral playing and very expressive singing. The good bits are very good, but he seems to struggle a little occasionally, especially in the upper register.

Sometimes it is part of the interpretation. As if Antonius von Padua is struggling with the sermon delivery too, hence him going to the water to preach the fishes.

Is this in the Royal Festival Hall, London? Looks like it, pre-refurbishment (obviously!).

Actually, it's the Frederic Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv, Israel
