I was raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and lived there off and on until my mid thirties. I'm in my sixties now and live in another state. I surely miss the OLD downtown Des Moines. It is not recognizable anymore-how sad! I remember the old Montgomery Wards, JC Penney, Younkers, Woolworths, and how beautifully decorated downtown was at during the Christmas season. Sure wish I could bring back those wonderful memories!! Thanks for the video!!!

I share those kinds of memories. I was raised in Des Moines from age 6 to 17, and left in 1965. In the early Sixties I enjoyed riding my bike (one speed, balloon tires) around the downtown on Sundays. I also spent a lot of time at the old library, and waked around exploring on Saturdays. I recall the stores you refer to--as well as Hyman's Bookstore and odd, out of the way places along side streets.

Try living in a place that pays the same but cost 3 to 4 times as much to live with worse schools and more crime. Do that for 10 years and then you might like des moines
