Everyone has talked about what wasted potential this series has, and for me, the biggest, most glaring gap is exploring Evie's family. Because it's *totally* possible that Evie is Snow White's half-sister. A villain for a mother and a Disney princess for a sister. Where's THAT conflict???

Interesting fact: While The Descendants franchise is a mixed bag everywhere, it has an even colder reception in Australia. It's mainly because the premise of villains being banished to an island for their crimes and their kids being mistreated because they're related to them. It hit too close to home for Aussie Disney fans and not all places down there such as Adelaide had any connection to convicts. Seeing those poor kids subjected to cruelty is a VERY sore topic in 'Straya because they once had their own Isle of the Lost named Nauru where kids were imprisoned.

To me, the saddest thing about Descendants is how much potential it had. The concept of the offspring of fairy tale characters exploring the complexities of humanity and calling out the idea of good and evil sounds like an awesome idea for a series (hell, it’s part of what makes the School for Good & Evil books so fun) and as a fan of Disney and fairy tales, it’d be right up my alley if it weren’t so half-arsed. My main problem with Descendants is how much it dumbs down what could have been a great concept.
@jenneacubero10363 жыл бұрын
Spooky Spice Had it not been for the different time periods, I think a "Descendants"-like story could work with a multi-crossover between "Tangled"/"Beauty And The Beast"/"Hunchback Of Notre Dame". Cassandra (Gothel's daughter), could have been revealed to have been fathered by Frollo with Gaston being her brother. Gothel and Frollo could've been married prior to their films and, when they both had enough with each other, they had their marriage annulled with Gothel taking Cassandra with Gaston staying with Frollo. But, as Frollo was a bit older, he could've ran away with neither parent caring at all. So, with Cassandra, Quasi, Belle and Rapunzel finding out the truth, they'd have to come to terms with it all; how Cassandra's family never had a chance to be a functional one to begin with. Then again, Cassandra already did come to terms with being a wicked witch's daughter, so this idea is pretty pointless. I just made it up on the spot to be honest.

All I have to say is that I despise how Disney treats Aurora, and by extension, Sleeping Beauty’s story/Aurora’s family as a whole. It really sucks that all the other princesses get to have their own things, but Aurora is stuck as “ooh, nap!! Girly!! No agency!!” I get that she’s not exactly active in her own movie, but Aurora does have a personality. It’s even expanded upon in Disney Princess: Enchanted Tales, where she tends to take the easy way out of things instead of facing stress. She’s responsible, but still very much a 16 year old. Feminine, but finding her own way and fit to stand beside Phillip as a ruler in her own right. But Disney would rather dunk on her because she’s “boring.”

@kimberlyterasaki48433 жыл бұрын
I think they did the thing of "Audrey turning evil because Mal stole Ben from her" because that was arguably the most immoral thing Mal ever did that she never got called out on. She literally drugged him with a love potion as the start to her character development and her long lasting relationship that is apparently heading toward marriage. Meanwhile, Audrey's feelings for having Ben publicly dump her for the new girl who's mom almost killed her parents are brushed aside by "look, she has Chad, she's fine." I do think the idea of a girl having been told her whole life that she was going to marry this one man and then not ending up with it has some interesting conflict, especially in fairy tales, but I wish we could've seen more of her family's reactions to her rampage and them realizing the pressure they put her under. Also, no one's going to address the fact that these kids are getting married fresh out of high school? I know most Disney characters get married young and the actors themselves are in their early 20s, but it's still weird to watch.

It actually makes me wonder if at least at one point Audrey was supposed to STAY evil but Disney wouldn't let the writers go through with it. I appreciate the attempt for trying to call out Mal for the love potion thing but at this point, it just feels like furious backpedaling... I feel like the only way to properly have the characters deal with it is to do a plot about Mal and Ben taking some time off to figure out how they really feel about each other but of course, we don't have time for something like that. Also how old are these kids exactly? Because if they're supposed to be around HIgh School isn't it a little early for Ben to pop the question to Mal?

As I've said on the other Descendants videos, the idea of the offspring of Disney characters isn't that bad in and of itself. It's the fact that they brought it into the modern era and tried to make it all KEWL and TOTALLY RADICAL that grates. The time frame might have made more sense if these were the distant descendants of the Disney characters--you know, the great-great-grandchildren or something. (Belle and her prince lived in the 18th century...why are they suddenly in the twenty-first?) But even THAT doesn't solve the problem of the self-consciously hip music and aesthetic...does ANYTHING look more desperate and strained than throwing in a rap? Whenever there's a rap in something produced by adults for kids, it reminds me of Peter Capaldi's Doctor trying 21st-century street slang on Dickensian orphans. Evie and Uma both come off as far more compelling and compassionate about the Isle situation, while Mal reads as selfish, and while the story exaggerates Audrey's reaction to a degree, Audrey is absolutely justified in calling out her boyfriend being stolen from her by means of magical roofie. And there's also the reality of Mal being positioned as the protagonist/hero of all this, while Uma and Audrey, both of whom are Black women, are treated as being in the wrong and needing to atone and apologize for their actions, while Mal isn't. Also, if you visit the production designer's website, the authoritarian tones get WAY worse as you can see details in the sets, especially propaganda posters. Ever After High also had better storytelling in five minute episodes that connected together in a overarching storyline. Descendants had three full length movies and could barely do that and mostly rushed tying up loose ends. EAH also had deep character motivations for why they wanted things to either change or stay the same. Apple White wanted things to stay the same not out of selfishness as first thought but rather out of fear as to what would happen to her and her friends should something drastic causes change. Raven Queen wanted to change things because she was destined to be the next Evil Queen but that wasn’t who Raven was and she tried to find a way to seek out her own destiny while still being true to herself.

I never knee they were life threatening, but that's because I was lucky enough (yes I consider this lucky) mine were caught at the early age of 4, ironically give a BETTER chance of survival. Today, 30 years later, the only reason I've alive is I HAVE MEDICINE THE WORKS. SOME. PEOPLE. WITH. SEIZURES. DON' T!!! I went ONCE TO a seizure support group in college and left after the counselor realized how scared I was too realize just how much WORSE it could be. One guy has several seizure daily including TWO during the meeting. Another only has "jolts", which I get somettimes if I missed a dose of medication as a warning to drop what I'm doing and go take it ASAP. And yes, some people have ZERO history. The sister of a friend of mine had a grand maul (Which I do get once every few years, requiring and emergency room visit as an adult, but a multi-day hospital stay as a kid) once on her life. But NOTHING AFTER. THAT'S what happened here. It's a chemical imbalance in your brains, either permanent like me or sudden like him. In my case we were ready since my family has a history of seizures. I'm just thrilled honestly my 2 younger brothers did not get this...special need...from my mom (And NO HELL NO I am NOT blaming HER for my seizures. If anything SHE blames HERSELF and I have tell her how licky I am to have meds that ALMOST always work, while she has ones that often fail her...Though HER history only includes only rare petite mauls not as bad as mine) All this to say SEIZURES CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE, and is people with a seizure disorder/epilepsy...well, once you curr cancer, we could use one too. Or AT LEAST more medicine that actually works, like I have. AND A EAY TO ACTUALLY TEST A CHILD FOR THE CHEMICAL IMBALANCE TO SEE IF THEY'RE PRONE TO ONE. And before you suggest that new surgery to fix it, that is still on trails so often doesn't work since they haven't figure it out and...Sometines even makes it worse. So while people in TERRIBLE conditions take the chance, I don't have to...Though I WANT to....SOME DAY after they figure it out...

Descendants: turns previously white character (Aurora) into a woman of colour. Descendants: completely ignores all canonical Disney heroes of colour aside from Mulan, most notably Aladdin and Jasmine who are among their most popular figureheads. They gave children to Dopey, the Fairy Godmother and Mr. Smee, but some of their most famous heroes (including other famous white couples, like Snow White and her Prince, Peter Pan and Wendy and Eric and Ariel) get zilch. Also makes her into a mean girl. As for Cruella and Ursula: the former could be a nod to the Dodie Smith book and the latter was already black in OUAT. Also the Villain party isn’t nearly as diverse as the Heroes, with their heroines of colour either having a white villain (Pocahontas with Ratcliffe) or a mostly forgettable one (Mulan with Shan Yu), so this decision made sense. Still, why use Aladdin and Jasmine’s adversary without any mention for them... it boggles my mind.

OK, this is a pretty tiny nitpick but I just have to get it off my chest since you brought up the whole "magic in movies needs to adhere to its own internal logic" thing. The ember doesn't work if it gets wet; fair enough, weaknesses like that are baked in to fantasy stories like this (water, fire, darkness, sunlight.) But when why didn't the ember die when Uma grabbed it at 10:25? It didn't hit the ocean, sure, but there was no way in here her Ursula-tentacle got completely dry in the split second it was out of the water. It's magic, it doesn't have to obey all the laws of physics, but at least make it obey the rules you made up, Descendants.

I always thought that after the first film, the premise should have changed main characters for each film. (Granted, so much more needed to be fixed storywise). I.e. Uma should have been the lead for part 2, Mal and the gang secondary characters. That way we get to learn about this new set of VKs (Hook and not one, but two Gaston brothers), and feel conflicted when paired to fight off our favorites of the first film. Because we grow to care about their plight and their crew on the Isle. You can still have Mal's story of feeling out of place, but let that remain the B plot. The third film should have centered around Audrey, to decontextualize her character and realize that she had a point in all this. Logically, her fall from grace should have served as Hades plot. To prove what he argues upon at the end of the film. I feel things would have been far more impactful if Mal would have sat back a bit more. Her arc, after all, had been completed in the first film - everything else given to her in the sequels was unnecessary as she doesn't change from any of it.

This whole franchise always felt...half-assed is not quite the right word. Take a Starkid production, filter out the naughty themes so you can air it on the actual real Disney channel, put enough effort into the costume & set designs that they're instantly recognizable as references but not interesting enough to stand on their own or be marketed as new Halloween costumes, give it dance songs that are not quite catchy enough to play outside of the movie...it's like there was a real idea for a cheesy but fun poke at the Disney fairytales, and then the rest was carefully constructed to make sure it never actually threatened the older movies (as if such a thing were possible)...

She's the personification of night, and serves as little more than a just-so story; one of the five similar personifications born from Chaos/Khaos. She then gives birth to two sons of another incarnation born from Chaos, and a few dozen more things on her own, and then she basically hangs out with her kids around Tartarus. The only thin she does after that is let one of her sons hang out at her house when Zeus gets made at him (I'm simplifying). The most infuriating part of this entire SHIT series, is the amount of talented people that got strung into it. Cheyenne Jackson? That man deserved WAY better than what Disney Channel gave him, and this isn’t even taking into account the amount of crap they keep doing to the properties in here. We haven’t even gotten to how much this entire series doesn’t even TRY to address the glaring problems they set up. None of the actual questions that are asked, none of the serious problems, and none of the darker narrative behind this is approached, because overall the villains here are essentially just victims of sugar coating by the “good guys”, while the good guys are nothing more than judgmental pricks (you know, ANOTHER subject that isn’t even fully explored in this franchise). I know most Disney channel movies don’t ever have the balls to talk about these, but other shows PRE-DATING this movie did on various occasions (see: That’s So Raven, The Proud Family). I will never understand how anyone can even justify the existence of this horrid series. It may be a kids movie, but that shouldn’t make it ok for everything to just be sugar coated as “well those kids had bad parents, therefore they need to be outcasts too, and we’re the good guys, so we deserve nice things.” I dare even say that it’s almost as one-dimensional in its entire structure as a Barney episode.

In Queen of Mean we hear a male voice in the backtrack harmonizing with Audrey and she also picks up the scepter(?) or crown (can’t remember which) RIGHT NEXT to the Fates’ shears. And then Hades is introduced. I think she somehow made a deal with in exchange for him getting an opportunity to get off the Isle. Maybe that’s what she was *really* doing in between movies lol. It would explain why her revenge reaction is so over the top, and also why Hades agrees to save her (y’know, other than the fact that Mr. Son of a Dictator was making him). It also gives him some substance as an actual villain, bc going along with this idea, she didn’t really do her homework on being specific, and thus the way he got off the Isle was by her nearly dying.

it's a shame that Cheyenne Jackson got most of his singing drowned out by the music, because he's got a killer voice. He was one of few things that was somewhat redeeming in the most recent season of The Masked Singer. Yes, I know he's appearance only doesn't excuse the disastrous decision to bring in former New York Mayor, Mr. Melty Face as I like to call him, but even I couldn't have that over look the very little that was good about the recent season.

'Queen of Mean' might have stumbled with the rapping, but the chorus are some of the best parts of the song. Also, Lin-Manuel Miranda can't save Disney for all of its projects musically. Let Jon Baptiste have more of 'em to work on for instance post-Pixar's 'Soul'.

I'm surprised this wasn't released into theaters like the last third movie in another musical franchise directed by Kenny Ortega.

thing is is that in the books none of the villains care much for their children and that also shows in the first movie. maleficent is emotionally and mentally abusive, jafar only sees his son as an employee , the evil queen is basically one of those pageant-hollywood mums who would happily risk her daughter well being for beauty and status, and carlos is legit afraid of his mum. she treats him like a servant, is very verbally abusive and may be physically abusive as well. in the first movie the kids aren't even that happy to see them through video call. so when in the end they rush to the isle to see their parents it doesn't make any sense and is very misguided. in the first movie carlos is scarred by his mother, and no doubt ben should've done something when he became king to make sure no more kids were being abused by their villain parents, and considering frolo and gothel are among them, its very concerning
@akanesaotome59243 жыл бұрын
Mother Gothel already have a daughter (or even 2 when you count Rapz) she was surprise lost kid in theTangled tv show, so giving her another one after Cass would be stupid. I think that's why there's no Melody here too. And I wish they were characters from Descendants web series, tho. This whole franchise is a guilty pleasure for sure. Also I think those twins are nothing in compare with Zevon and Yzla. XP

Gothel has a canon kid in the novels named Ginny, too. So, Cassandra has a little sister that was born on the Isle.

I know a good punishment! For the their awful story telling that gives a major disservice to the source materials and making no sense, the writers shall be condemned to watch "Love Never Dies" and "Cursed Child" back to back for five nights >:) . The sad part is that HadesxMaleficent is ruined for me because of this film. It was even on "The House of Mouse" for pete's sakes!

Descendants suffers from the exact same problems Once Upon A Time did; the potential, the lack of big commentary on fairytale tropes... Though it does thankfully lack OUAT's tendency to try and redeem rapists without acknowledging what they did was indeed rape. The music, as usual, is ass, and I would keep an eye on Audrey, since she's a Charmed one and those tend to go evil on a dime (curiously, OUAT had a Charmed one from the superior version, Rose McGowan aka Paige as Young Cora).
@willlyon7129 Жыл бұрын
To me, Once Upon a Time has potentials but it was wasted by a low budget soap opera and lazy writing.
@tsifirakiehl4250 Жыл бұрын
I mean, Descendants does do the G-rated version of redeeming rapists without acknowledging the rape. Mal used a love potion on Ben and gets away with it, even though if love potions existed in real life, they’d be classified as a date rape drug.
