Woman if you want a "floating Tool" but doesnt like when it`s "floating too much" them mayby get yourself an inflatable hammer to hit yourself in the head with insted of listening to this? This way you can adjust "your level of floating" into perfection. If everything in this song reminds you of Super Mario games and stuff mayby just buy a Nintendo.

There is no possible way to thoroughly enjoy a song like Descending without multiple listens. The more comfortable you get with the song, and there's a lot! the more you can enjoy it. It's simply not your ordinary cup of tea. People with patience will find something quite beautiful and the impatient will fall to the sides. Since you gave everyone Mario I will give you this... That part you had to listen to again...that entire is like riding on a raft down a river, and then the river and a lot of rapids, and then just at that point when the song crescendos you go over a waterfall. You easily survive and enjoy the rest of the ride, all the twist and turns, because you know now you can survive anything, and then you reach the shore. The greatest river ride ever. Descending is now my favorite Tool song, and I expect it to be for a very long time. The song has everything because Tool allowed no boundaries. Epic yes.

For me, yes. Fave Tool song ever. And I'm 60 and have been a fan since they started. How they do his voice, the arrangement of the instruments, the atmosphere...the whole thing is masterfully crafted and quite effective to me on both an emotional and cerebral level. When I put my headphones on in bed at night and listen to this in the dark I just get lost in this one and lose all sense of time. And for me the lyrics are very integral to the song and really hit home.

I got into Tool in college right before 10,000 Days was released. For me, nothing compares to Lateralus & AEnima in terms of front-to-back cohesive album. It could be because that was my introduction and it's nostalgia. That said, Lateralus is more floaty, AEnima more raw. Third Eye and Pushit were the portals that led to the future floatiness. I still love singles like this from 10K Days and Fear Inoculum, but they don't hit me the same way as a whole compared to the other two albums. I think I like their earlier anger/edge combined with pushing the boundaries of the composition. I expected the former to wane as they inevitably mature as adults and became more successful, haha.

Hey Lauren, you're quite right about the relaxing part of the song. Maynard asks in a singing voice to "stir us from our wanton slumber" but the song did quite the opposite... Invincible is probably the best track on the record, both lyrically and compositionally; Adam's guitar work on 7empest seriously competes with it as my favorite from Fear Inoculum though. I don't know if it's just me, but the songs on this record felt like they started out as more conventional Tool tracks lengthwise, but then they went back and extended a phrase hear and a added a measure there. Could be why the album feels noticeably more floaty, and thus off-putting to some fans who wanted either a bigger change sonically or a return to their more aggressive roots. I'm just happy they put out a new record period, especially after thirteen years of waiting.

Descending is certainly the song from Fear Inoculum that came the closest to the good Tool sound. And as you have been pointing out, the sound effects on the vocals are at least off-putting, to me they sound straight out bad. I personally couldn't listen to this album without smiling for at least a couple weeks after it came out. It's so hard to pick a favorite because they are all good for different reasons. If I had to choose, it would be Culling Voices. Partly because of the lyrics and also because when they perform it live Danny plays guitar at the beginning of the song too.

This album just seemed weird for the first several listens and I didn't like it either. Similar to a new roller coaster, I think it is just a bit overwhelming and floaty the first couple rides, but then once you are familiarized with what's happening and can process all the details passively, it's amazing. Other albums were that way as well, but not quite as much as this one, so I knew I had to just keep retrying it until "taste acquired".
