Egypt in the early 20th Century just before the time of the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. A man meets an old friend in an unfashionable Egyptian hotel. This man has begun excavating and it seems to be having a strange effect on him.
If you know Blackwood, you may know that some of his longer stories and novellas (The Man Whom The Trees Loved, The Centaur) can be quite slow and brooding and hint at impersonal, inhuman forces affecting those who go too deep into them, rather than thrusting monsters in your face.
This is one of those.
This story was requested by a Patreon.
I am back now and able (I hope to do the novels and novellas on a Monday for those special few who like them!)

There are times when I'm listening to you read, the story becomes secondary to the sound of your voice. It can be so relaxing that even though I listen to the end I often haven't a clue of exactly what I heard. Only that I am so relaxed and feeling less pain. Just left hospital a couple of days ago after being poked prodded and scanned, only to learn I have pneumonia. And at least 3 weeks of bed rest. I've stocked up on books but of course I prefer listening to you and Jasper. Luckily I have quite a collection of stories by both you brilliant writers and narrators 💜

What a haunting premise! And, as always with Blackwood, beautifully written. Your skill as a presenter enhances the eerie atmosphere.

I fell asleep listening to this story. I came back into consciousness into absolute darkness, dead silence and still air. OMG, I am in Egypt. I am underground in Egypt. I am in a f*cking tomb, underground in Egypt. How? Why? I don't like it here. Something is touching my leg. I am going to die! Am I already dead? Mighty Osiris, something is in here with me! Is it a giant hairy spider? Thank Horus! It's only my dog, I am in my dark living room in California. I am re-listening to this fantastic story now and staying awake this time!

I think if anywhere in the world, could bewitch one, back into the past,it would be Egypt. The eeriness of this story creeps, unexpectedly,up on you.

Thank you so much... this was brilliant. If you want to read a really creepy story from Algernon Blackwood you should read "The Threfold Cord". It´s just a short story but it´s very disturbing.

With content like this, I am proud to be a member of your channel. I wish you the best success with your writing and your narration. My work is done for today, and my cat is purring on the floor. She has 3 cat trees, 3 beds, and a big stuffed chair, but she chose the ground tonight. We will enjoy your soothing voice as Mr. Blackwood slowly takes us down the psychological well. How far will we descend? Only time will tell. Thanks for being you, Tony (if I may be allowed on a first name basis).
