Leslie Howard was a class act who left far too early. Leslie would have made a brilliant Oscar Wilde, had his career not been so tragically halted. His portrayal of Baroness Orczy's foppish hero still remains unrivalled after eight decades. Those one liners still sound great today. A reminder of a time, when films relied on a decent script and excellent actors. Many of the films from the 1930s seem far superior than the remakes twenty years later.

The subtitles here are a pain (the guillotine goes "thud"), but this remains the most durable version of this particular swashbuckler--and Leslie Howard is romantically perfect as Sir Percy, probably because he was so unlikely as a heroic master of disguise. Raymond Massey has a ferocious snarl, Nigel Bruce (as the Prince of Wales, no less) bumbles superbly and Merle Oberon shows off her unearthly beauty. Who could want more? Thanks for this classic!

This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world, This precious stone set in the silver sea... This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England. Howard reads these famous lines from Richard II so lyrically.

Leslie Howard's real-life exploits are well worth looking into. He was a bit of Pimpernel in his own right.

Some really fine acting, by some good actors. Sometimes, a story is just a story. This was made back in the day when films were entertainment. Leslie Howard died during World War II.

the scarlet pimpernel was actually the 1st "super hero" in literature. as far as movies go. i do like this with leslie howard, but, sink me, if anthony andrews didn't bring the character to fopish life.

Although the movie is good, it bears only the slightest resemblance to the novel.

History lesson. Raymond Massey I'm sure most have head of Massey Ferguson and Massey Harris farm equipment, that's his family. His Father was also the first Canadian born Governor General of Canada! Now everyone is a bit wittier!

Your sentiment is understandable, considering Britain’s conquest of your nation (yes I looked up your channel) A little research tells me that under the Brits, Sri Lanka achieved universal suffrage. Women in Sri Lanka had the vote before they had it in the U.K. It also tells me that the Brits might’ve inadvertently planted the seeds of discord between the Sinhalese & the Tamils. Life for your citizens has been hard since independence. Blame for that must be shared by many, not just the Brits

Chauvin is described by the novelist as a shortish, thin, and little man and Sir Percy as abnormally tall, standing a head above the tallest on either side of the Channel. Both the features are misrepresented in the otherwise well taken movie. why are these movie makers commit such patent errors? The movie also has altered a lot from the original and has failed to sustain the suspense and drama, a very sorry fact. But, better something than nought. Svbrao

Your point about universal suffrage is good, but few things were "inadvertent" with the British. I suspect that planting the seeds of discord was profitable to them. Anyway, it is very hard to condone or condemn. History is not a video game and we can't reload at a former point to try different paths in hope of a better outcome. :-)
