I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

Fun fact: the inability to picture images in your head is called Aphantasia and can effect sighted people as well

@@april2216 I doubt that because she’s describing what the colours make her think of.
@april2216

@@prinzezze I would assume she can still associate those colors with things, she has been able to see color in her lifetime even if she can’t imagine what the colors look like she might still be reminded of things she once was able to see that were those colors. Also other people can tell her what the color of something is, maybe she could just influenced by how others with vision interpret colors. At least that’s what I’m assuming based on my own experiences with not being able to visualize colors the same as most might (even if I’m not blind and Molly is) and what Molly said in the video!

I have total aphantasia. I can't see, smell, hear, recall the way things feel, or taste in my mind. So no images in my mind, most people can recall a scent like lemon or chocolate chip cookies baking. Nope, not me. I can't hear someone's voice in my mind or remember what any sound is like. Same with textures (it's why I'm always touching things!) or the way something will taste (which is weird that I'm a good cook!)
@TheNeurospicyMama
@TheNeurospicyMama 2 жыл бұрын
@@cassie6985 They are finding that aphantasia just like most brain things is a scale. I have total aphantasia with no senses in my mind and then the other side is hyperphantasia where people have extremely vivid imagery and senses in their mind and can play a movie in their mind of what they are thinking about. When I go to draw a monkey I think of the facts I know about monkeys and can create some semblance of one. It won't look very good. Now I'm better at drawing a cat without looking at one because I'm more familiar with the cats. Still, unless I'm looking at a reference photo it isn't going to be that great. As for the other senses, for instance. When I was packing for a trip in a different climate, I could not remember what it feels like to be hot. I kept wanting to pack my jacket and my kids said, "You won't need that at all mom!" I also suspect that I have SDAM (Self Deficient Autobiographical Memory) which apparently overlaps with people with aphantasia.

@Anna's randomness WhoCares so I see letters and numbers in colors. I’m not sure how it works or if I will eventually lose it, but even when I’m thinking of them I see a letter or a number in color in my head. Like for me A is bright red, B is light yellow, C is a very light blue, and D is purpleish brown. And for numbers 1 is yellow, 2 is dark blue, 3 is like a grass green, and 4 is dark red. Every single letter and number is a different color, and when I see them in words I see each letters individual color.

This is so interesting to me! I know a lot of people say smell can make them remember things. I have never had a good sense of smell, and certain smells right now are completely GONE for me. I can remember what lavender smells like, but I can't smell it now. I can remember what pancakes smell like, and it makes me think of having a headache. Completely random. I can see the colour red and it makes me think of the smell and taste of toffee apples. All random, all weird. :P

That's aphantasia, it's usually brought up in a visual sense, as in the inability to picture things in your head, but it can also be the inability to play music or recreate voices in your head or the inability to recreate smells in your head, it can affect anyone regardless of their ability to sense those things.

I think this topic was really interesting and informative, the way you described what you associated with the colors were tangible things,like touching something, and feelings or emotions, that you associated with that color. You have a very descriptive vocabulary.

Sponsorship starts at 4:10 and ends at 9:06 I love your videos Molly, but it is kind of frustrating for so much of a somewhat educational experience to be taken up by a perfume ad I thought maybe it'd link to your view of colour a bit more

I am not blind but my boyfriend and I were talking about colors and color illusion and found out that we both see color differently and it honestly blew my mind. For some reason I never realized that every single person sees and reacts to color differently and actually see it differently. It's actually quite beautiful if you think about it and now knowing that blind people think similarly is amazing. Things like this make me so happy, much luv and peace to everyone.

Since watching you I have thought about descriptions a lot. I never had descriptions of my pictures on Instagram. I am working on that now. My problem has been how to describe things. I never even thought of describing the colors. I will now.

This was fascinating!! I'm sighted and I've always had trouble describing colors, but the way you describe them make so much sense to me. I could see, feel and smell everything you were describing. I'll have to think on this more to see what memories colors conjure up for me. It is definitely based on experiences. Black makes me think of Friesian horses. Big, powerful, beautiful, hairy, the smell and sound. Or it makes me think of moonlit nights in a snowy forest. This is fun!

Huh, I'd always assumed that since you lost sight progressively that you still had some memory of what things look like. It never even occurred to me that you might not retain visual memory. Thanks for busting that particular myth for me!

I would be interested in a collaboration with Veritasium, Physic Girl, or other physician. It would be interesting because physicians think of colours in non-visual properties, like temperature and frequencies.

I love listening to your color descriptions!!! Because of my albinism I have no filter in my eyes so my eyes absorb the light and that make everything very bright. I love to see colors because I can see them so well and sparkly things like crystals or diamonds. As much as light is very overwhelming to my eyes I am drawn to rainbow lights that are made when you put a light on crystals. But when it starts getting dark and there is very low light I feel colorblind until a light is turned on.
