thank you so much, these videos are so helpful! In my analysis of Shakespeare's interpretation of Desdemona, I think she is portrayed as a weak character because of the boy actor that played her. Shakespeare must not have a strong actor to give more difficult lines to so she can be seen as quite weak at times compared to some of Shakespeare's other female characters e.g. she doesn't have a difficult scene like Ophelia's flowers. Her name also invites us to look at her in a particular way as is Greek for misfortunes, unlucky- perhaps this end was fated from the start? I like to contrast Desdemona with Bianca as both are very different - Bianca is much more worldy and experienced whilst Desdemona is not. Bianca is aware of her position as a woman in a mans world and has to be contended with it. It is quite comic when she becomes jealous ('let the devil and his dam haunt you!' It is also interesting how Cassio and Bianca's relationship contrasts Desdemona's and Othello. If Othello and Desdemona are in an relationship which is very idealistic (especially for a Jacobean audience, perhaps less for a more modern one?), Cassio and Bianca are much more realistic as their relationship is more than sex and money. I also read that the boy actor that played Desdemona may have played Bianca as well and that may be why they are never seen together? Just a thought but very interesting! I would love it if you could do a video on Emilia as a feminist especially with her power speech in the end of act 4, scene 3. Thank you again!

Love this interpretation! Comparing Desdemona to Emilia is another strong way of examining naivety and worldliness. The point about a male actor is interesting too. The Willow Scene at the end of Act 4 is certainly challenging...though granted not like other Shakespearian tragic women such as Ophelia!

Othello punished Desdemona by death because he believed lies Desdemona pardoned Othello in death despite the truth I wonder if WS eluded to an honor k*lling which did and does happen in the setting areas outside of Italy. Desdemona didn’t have a brother and her father had died. Othello says, “Yet she must die, else she’ll betray more men.” As if it is his duty to punish her.
