The 88 was also designed as a blockbuster , hence the ready armour piercing shells for use against concrete strong points.

Rommel didn't discover the 88. They were issued AP rounds in '36, and crews were trained in anti-tank gunnery.

Yea British comunist radio announcer Lord Haw Haw who fled to Germany called them the Rats to try demoralising them as a mind game, But mostly Aussies and the other allies at Tobruk wore the name with pride instead and even made rat shaped badges out of downed German fighter planes and wore it proudly.
