with soap bottles, one very important feature for me is that I can successfully handle it with wet, soapy hands without it slipping out of my grasp. I bought some fancy organic etc etc dish soap with a cool looking bottle and I hated it SO much because the bottle was designed with no grip and no balance so it would fly out of my hands when I was in the middle of washing dishes. That dawn bottle is ugly, but those raised swirl things give your soapy hand something to hold onto so the bottle doesnt go flying out of your hand when you are trying to use it . I save and re-use the utilitarian Meyers soap bottles too because it has grooves in it that also give you a decent soapy grip.

Very good analysis! As a designer I believe this stuff registers on a subconscious level as well, but have you come across any research proving it?
@Design.Theory3 жыл бұрын
No, I haven't. It would certainly be a major validation to our field, though. I'm not sure how one would conduct the experiment, however.

@@Design.Theory I have seen some research done with FMRI where our brain reacts differently to visuals of pointy corners Vs smooth corners. I would imagine experiments with cognitive scientists will be a good place to start

@@mukulagarwal8746 This is amazing. Do you know where I might find these studies? Any Google Keywords or titles?

@@Design.Theory just saw this. I have seen lots of studies in HCI (Human Computer Interaction) publications. I came across them by going down the rabbit hole of the original book that mentions "affordances" by James J Gibson on Google.

I think this clean minimal design has more similarity to the expensive shampoo/body wash products. The sub-conscious correlation there is minimal design = high-end product = expensive and therefore better, people want to feel like they are pampering themselves with luxury. Whereas the glass/dish cleaner market is more about features like "50% less scrubbing" "anti-bacterial" etc. more like a value for money market. That's why those bottles are cluttered with features instead of having a minimal design. Just my theory why there are not many clean design on those products.

You could be right. I would be curious to find out one of the design director's/marketing director's intention around brand positioning.

@@Design.Theory Yes, difficult to say without understanding their reasoning. Nice video series, I learnt a lot!
@Design.Theory4 жыл бұрын
@@tarun9542 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Another possibility is that method just wants to seem less gimmicky. Any time I see a marketing message like "50% less scrubbing" I always wonder how you would even measure that. It seems like a baseless assertion. Maybe Method is trying to let the product speak for itself by having a minimal design? These are all just guesses.
@tarun95424 жыл бұрын
@@Design.Theory Yes, very much possible that they found some trends that the gimmicks that used to work earlier don't work anymore on millennial buyers. And millennials are more likely to research something online before buying, so the bottle itself doesn't have to do the selling (of features), the buyer is coming to buy the product after already having researched about it. The traditional way was to learn about the product through its packaging itself while in the store. All guesses...
