This is just a prototype test for my undergraduate thesis. There's still much room for improvement ..
I hope you'll enjoy it ;)

I just came across this video.Jean Paul Farrugia was a student at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta. He was an excellent student and his project was obviously regarded as one of the best of that year. This was the first hydrofoil ever built at our University and considering the limitations, Jean Paul deserves all the congratulations he can get. It was a good design, well constructed, strong, well finished, kept simple, light, and yet with very little twist in the hull. Considering that the foils were straight, all the lateral stability came from the weight distribution of Jean Paul himself. Jean Paul Farrugia should consider reading for Ph.D. As we say in our language, Prosit tassew..

XLnt job congratulations ! like the Wright bros you flew. unlike the Wright bros you had no steering. to effect steering anhedral or dihedral in the foils would have allowed the craft to bank stably. Then steering could have been affected by a movable front foil or outboard thrust. beautiful and successful venture you did. I bet you didn't stop smiling for a week.

Would it be possible to make a wakeboard like this? The ones I find online only have a hydrofoil at the end. But it would be a lot easier to build if one was in the front and one in the back, just like you did it. Do you think it is possible?

Gr8 job & such a tiny outboard. A Q if l may. The foils even though they worked well. Wouldn't it have been better if instead of being flat that they had a V- shape to them similar 2 the hull shape. I am no marine engineer by any stretch. And not a Sydney Australia resident but the hydro foils on Sydney Harbour have that V shape. Other than that a fabulous job & fuel saver. 👍👌

Very interesting, thank you for uploading this! I've long been dreaming about building a hydroplane boat in the 2-tonne class. I have a few questions I'd love if you have the time to address. Did you simulate or calculate, and which programs or techniques did you use? How did you decide on the profile (cross-sectional outline) of the planes? How did you figure out precisely how large the hydroplanes would be? How did you calculate/simulate the stability of the flat hydroplanes? How did you calculate/simulate the strength of the skeleton and the hydroplane struts? My project is just a dream and will remain so for long, but I'd love to hear what you did!

+HeaanLasai, Hi, Thank you for your comment. To answer your queries, 1. Yes, everything was calculated through 'Fluid Dynamics' equations and simulated in a 'naval architectural' software beforehand. 2. The cross-section depends on the intended speed. Then you need to evaluate what lift/drag coefficient is best to use. I used the NACA profile sections.

If the wooden foil isn't needed for rigidity, since it's probably wrapped in fiberglass anyways, a carefully shaped cross section that is duplicated on a router then glued together on a jig to form the shape would be much faster and precise.

all other thing equal, yes. The drag from the foils are much much lower than the drag of the hull. But your boat will be flying, not sailing, so there are stability issues that need to be adressed.
