WhooWee; I finally got up from my derriere; and ordered one. Wow! "Caint" wait til it comes. And thanks again to Richard Hummel and Jeff Ferris; for inventing it and showing us how to use it, respectively. For I consider Richard to be one of the Greatest creator/builders; and Jeff is one of THE greatest teachers. Wow! "Long Live" Woodpeckers!

I built a pair of restorer's trestles (3 pairs actually) with splayed and raked legs that are let into the beam in socket (i.e. 3-sided) mortises. The splay and rake angles are different. So, I had to saw and chisel out the sockets at a compound angle. It's not something that stays in my head, I have to re-learn how to calculate the resultant angle every time because I cut compound angles infrequently. I enjoy the challenge of figuring it out and executing the cuts by hand. That's what being an engineer gets you - more work.

I tend to start with distances for rake and splay, rather than angles. I think I'll make my own spreadsheet to do the calculations - who doesn't love a good spreadsheet?

Technology gives us memorable opportunities. Whether in the shortening of distances or in the learning we acquired, I feel that many have gone and brought so much good knowledge together. This technique for banks, honestly, came to meet a job that I really want to learn... not to mention, of course, the spreadsheet that helps to make the calculations. Thanks for sharing, I'm grateful as so many for this wonderful experience to which we will be heading towards a great learning experience. Vanderlei (Brazil)

Jeff, I've been looking at this for a while now but haven't quite been able to pull the trigger. The reason is I keep looking at the AutoAngle Drill Guide and wondering if it would be more useful or convenient being it's not constrained to the drill press. It would be a great "Deep Dive" going over the two together explaining the differences and where one might choose one over the other. All the Best, Chuck.
@WoodpeckersLLC5 ай бұрын
Well, Chuck, I'll pass along an anecdote which I think will help you out. I would have to look diligently to find the Duax that is in my shop, but the AutoAngle is on the right back corner of the workbench that's against the south wall. I like the Duax, but AutoAngle is a little faster to get set up. If I were working on something that required absolute precision, I'd probably dig out the Duax. I did similar splayed leg stools with both for their Deep Dives and both handled the job admirably.
@toolchuck5 ай бұрын
@@WoodpeckersLLC Thanks for the quick reply! That is what I was thinking, Duax for a bit more accuracy over the AutoAngle for speed and convenience. Not quite the same thing but years ago I asked my Festool Rep. to explain the differences between the DF-500 and the DF-700 Domino's and which to buy first. His answer was, "buy the DF-500 first, but knowing you, you'll end up getting both". The man is clairvoyant. 👻 I'll get the Duax for now, but I'll probably end up getting both. 🤣 I do love Woodpecker's tools! All the Best, Chuck.

If you ever get around to making a Mk.2 version, change the sacrificial block cut out shape to a 'clover leaf' with 4 corner holes centered on the intersection of the sides. Not everyone has a CNC router to cut out playing card shaped blocks and a clover leaf shaped cut out would let anyone with a saw (hand, table or rail) easily make their own blocks, and for drilling through holes that come out of the top surface you are going to be using a lot if don't want your project to have a bunch of 'moon craters' on the show side.
@jeffpalser4928 Жыл бұрын
On my list of projects is the building of a bench that about 12" x 48" with angled legs. The surface area of the Duax doesn't seem large enough to support such a large board. Any ideas on how to support 12" x 48" or are you planning to create a larger, big brother version of the Duax for these bigger projects?

...and BTW I do own the large 48" Woodpecker Drill Press Table.

Two comments. First, you've come across the #1 reason we built the AutoAngle drill guide...drilling angled holes on large workpieces. www.woodpeck.com/autoangle-drill-guide.html Second, I am trying to visualize your design. Most splay leg benches have all the angles in the legs and an apron, then the bench top joins the apron squarely. The apron joinery would be pretty straightforward with a Duax.
@jeffpalser4928 Жыл бұрын
@@WoodpeckersLLC Thank you for your quick response. I've got 14 of you systems on my wish list but I somehow missed this one. This is the perfect solution for my current needs but I see how Duax would better manage smaller parts. I really appreciate everything you do.

What a smart bit of kit. Do they sell them in England. It be ideal for me as I do green woodworking and one of my goals is to build a Windsor chair. But drilling angles for the legs is a pain up the bum this would help. Plus I am severely visually impaired that is a big problem of mine. Paragraph I can’t stand back and see it’s everything I touch or are someone else. So something like this it could be that I’ll be able to do it on their own once I set it up. Trying to find a link to download the spreadsheet? Probably get someone to help me look for it later great video

Paul, you can order from us directly at woodpeck.com. At this point in time we do not have a dedicated distributor in the U.K. The link for the spreadsheet is in the description, but I'm going to put it right here so you don't have to go hunting for it. @@WoodpeckersLLC thank you for the link. Gutted you haven’t got anyone in England yet hopefully you have someone out as soon as the cost of shipping is extortionate at the moment and the taxis. And me don’t have a job and do this for fun it’s expensive kits to buy stuff. Hopefully one day you’ll be over here selling your stuff, There are loads of woodworking shops over here, but it be quite good to get designated stores what do green with working as well I have said the KZbin clip to a couple of other people from the green woodworking world in England. Can I ask on here roughly the cost of the kit and roughly how much it would cost to transport it to England just to give me a rough idea, you’ve got some amazing kits I’ve listen to most of your KZbin clips what come out
