The flying turret syndrome was first noted in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, when Soviet tanks were being destroyed by old fashioned, conventional 105mm anti-tank rounds.

But those Soviets & present Russian still to this day continued producing these inferior junk tanks. Their latest much talked about Armata T14 could be of the same vulnerable jack in the box obsolete design characteristics. No wonder none were deployed in this Ukraine conflict, so pitiful those tank crew operators were literally pulverized to a point that their untraceable molten bodies were basically blended with their scorched tank slated unrecoverable as such.
@u2beuser714
@u2beuser714 Жыл бұрын
@@brettdemauna9332 The T-14 design is fundementally different. The crew is isolated in a capsule and the turret is remotely controlled, the ammunation is also isolated almost like the western tank , so the "jack in the box" phenomena isnt relevant when talking about the T-14. Their only problem with the T-14 is production numbers which is low and wont be available in big numbers for a long time
@AlreadyTakenTag

@@brettdemauna9332 I personally believe the T-14 to be a fantastic tank. But the Russian industry and economy just can't built nor afford those tanks. There is also the fact that the T-14 is already having to compete with designs from the west (like the KF51) and the west is producing/has produced weapons able to fight it

They also use an auto-loader for the main gun, which removed a 4th crew member. In western tanks, the ammo is stored in armoured boxes which the 4th member takes out. Unfortunately, the auto-loader can provide a higher rate of fire, it can suffer breakdowns which is not good in a battle. So the Russians accepted the trade off and hoped for the best.
@JackSanders7777
@JackSanders7777 Жыл бұрын
The auto loader is not as efficient as a human being in a crew of 4. The loader in US tanks stores the ammo in box attached to the turret with blast doors to project an explosion outward. The Soviet tanks store the ammo rounds at the bottom of the turret which is the Achilles Heal of their tanks. The best tank Russia ever built was the T10 in WWII.
@layneparker7408

Auto loader does not provide a higher rate of fire. US Abrams rate of fire 12 rounds min, Russian T72 8 rounds a min. With a well trained loader that number can be as high as 15-16 rounds a min.

I'm one year older than Adm. Stavridis and I was training in armour starting from 1970. When the Russians started moving in tanks in large numbers towards Ukraine I saw they were replaying what we were schooled to expect from them 50 years ago and fingers crossed, it would have failed back then too. Thankfully we didn't need to find out and my life moved on. I mean right down to advancing on many fronts and if they find a weak spot, divisions leave their original objectives to pile on there. And the tanks self-destructing. Observers 50 years ago reported several Soviet tanks on exercises would advance, shoot, and stay still. The autoloader had killed everyone inside without a sign of trouble from the outside. On exercise the load is minimal.
@saltmerchant749
@saltmerchant749 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, the largest proportion of Russian armour combat losses have actually come as a result of native Ukrainian Stugnas and Artillery. There isn't an armoured platform in any army that can boast being artillery proof but the ammo storage design of Soviet/Russian to accomodate the autoloader basically ensures that cook off events occur with regularity and with little hope of crew survivability. Russian armour without survivability upgrades are essentially mobile crematoriums for Russian tankists.

This flaw is well known veeeery old fact, since practically those tanks were seen first time. On the other hand, it can be very effective tank, but it must be used accordingly. What it lacks in armor and protection, it mades up with fire power and agility, it's fast, got low profile and no joke armament. equipped with modern visuals and comms and there you go. Fortunately Russians are still tactically and logistically in the 1940's. Ukrainians are using those exact tanks in all versions and modifications with great effect.

The Russians oldest and most used tank (the T 72) is anything but powerful and "agile" it's 3 man crew with autoloader has slower rate of fire than the abrahms tank with a crew of 4 and no autoloader loader. @@handlesarefeckinstupid Anything with modern visual & wide angle thermal sights will do well as a tank against heavy infantry. However, such equipment is expensive & technically demanding to integrate/maintain, so a lot of Russian tanks don't have it. Meanwhile, the Ukrainians are using arguably less capable armor, however to a standard of maintenance & readiness that the Russians have allowed to degrade. Also, there is the defensive advantage - a tank is not a weapon, but part of a larger system of weapons. On its own, a tank is barely above a civvie grocery cart in the face of a coordinated military system of operations.

Russia probably expected to take Ukraine relatively quickly probably within 2 weeks max hence why they had logistics issues a month into the invasion. Ukraine's military has not had any massive changes in technology since it was part of the Soviet Union. And Russia had no way to certainly expect modern western weapons to end up in Ukraine.Russia expected to attack a country with old Soviet technology, so no need for more modern weaponry would hvae been necessary but instead, Russia is facing more modern use of weapons thanks to western countries. A combination of underestimating Ukraine's military and western weapons is why Russia has failed thus far.

@james Deer well there is a higher survivability if you don’t just cook off instantly, most modern tanks these days have an ammo compartment that directs the explosion upwards & out (protecting the crew in a separate compartment). It costs less to have a crew survive than a whole tank and crew gone. Also Anti tank missiles aren’t a big explosion, its usually that big because there is a larger copper stream of molten metal (that fires like a bullet in a straight line) so is more likely to only take out one or two members of the crew.

My father was a tank commander in the New Zealand Division in Italy, 1943/45 - they used Shermans. He told me they lost a tank at Casino. It was hit and brewed up on the spot and everything inside it that could burn or explode burned and exploded. After the battle was over, they were able to get to the tank but they found very little of the crew - "A few bone fragments", he said. 1944 0r 2022, tank warfare is still a gruesome business when it goes bad for the crews - probably worse for the crews today, as anti-tank weapons are designed to completely destroy the tank in one hit. In my father's time, anti-tank weapons mainly shot bits of high-speed metal and made holes in the targets.

When you look at the turrets of an old battleship, what you're seeing is only the gun hose, atop a multi-story structure. Ammunition and propellent is stored much deeper in the vessel, where it is unlikely to be hit by enemy fire. Cold war Soviet tanks were designed the same way - a small munition storage area in the center of the vehicle, below the expected line of fire surrounded by the engine, front armor, and road wheels. Top attack warheads are specifically designed to counter all tanks, not just Russian ones, and a Challenger or M1 in these conditions would be losing crew as well. Combat equipment is only as effective as the people using it.

That's probably more than half of Russian military design. But also the Brass made stringent (and frankly dumb) logistics and design decisions way back in the 70s/80s. The main reason why the carousel of ammo is INSIDE, is as they said in report "to keep the tank streamlined". What they really mean is they needed to keep them small so they could fit on Russia's Railways and fit through train tunnels in the Ural's and further east. That way if war broke out East, they could quickly transport their tank regiments through rail. Otherwise it'd take tank regiments possibly a YEAR to drive across Russia. So the two requirements were Under 13 feet tall, and no wider or longer than a train car. This severely limited their ability to build large turrets with Blow off ammo storage, and because they wanted to use auto-loaders, they had no space to store ammo behind the croww, between the engine and a fire-wall.

The turret blowing off the hull is a phenomena as old as the Renault FT, the first tank with a 360 degree rotating turret in 1917. It's called "cooking off."
