This makes sense coming from years in the professional environments. This together with radical honesty will get you far.

There’s a lot of process and within each process different approaches. My favorite and most simple one is Pentagram’s process. Side note: My biggest pet peeve is designers adding other designers work as inspiration in their decks to show clients.

I want to know what a case study is and how to go about doing one. I imagine there are different methodologies to it based on the subject/type of project.

How did you make the squiggle line animation? I want to do something similar :) Btw, when I asked my self who inspired IDEO the idea of the hmw questions? I came out with Min Basadur who has also has a very similar process but in more phases to it. He called it "simplex thinking"

I was messing with wiggle expressions in after effects lol. And that’s cool! I’ll check out simplex thinking

Design is about making a product as a pain in the ass to have repaired as possible to incentivize the owners into using the companies service or to just get a new one. Design is making sure that your customers buy the new one every 2 or 3 years. Design is making sure that you limit the information of how your products work from the customer to make sure they are ill-informed about the products they buy from you. Design is making sure that the only explanation of technology is magic and not science. if you can do that, you have a multi trillion dollar company that can get away with whatever they want. And make sure you name your company after a fruit. You are right. design is more than looks and drawings. Design can be the design of control.

It will really great video series. I am curious how they add small design elements in product. Example if someone design a remote then how they add that battery changing mechanisms. And how they decide where to add screw and small support, and where pcb will go and how wires will attach.

They’re all great questions! Even if I don’t answer those in the series specifically, I hope the things I show will help too

I worked as an automotive designer in a large accessories company where there was no time for the design process. I would get an exact outline and I would have to design exactly what they want. Sometimes I would get a week to do it, sometimes a day or two. It really depends on the company so I would suggest researching the company you're applying for and tailoring & tweaking your portfolio to their requirements.

Normally, in giant corporate , this process is managed by two guys. A product marketer and designer. Product takes care of research, market data analysis, consumer insights, target segment. Then he will give a full briefing or inspiration to designer to develop the best design addressing this unsolved problem. Because those analysis really take lot of works, expertise and marketing tool. Designer has no way to interpret this..... trust me. Unless your product is not complex or your company lacks of resources.

TBH I was a bit shocked by your view and criticisms of HCD, not because they aren't valid, but by how they don't reflect the broader picture at all. I feel like your college/professor had a biased and limited perspective. Firstly, It's not something IDEO created. Sure, they are key evangelists for the approach, and particularly within the Industrial Design space, but they are not where the movement started, nor represent the only major players. Whilst it's fair to criticise the earlier work of Don Norman for the over focus on usability, ergonomics, and interaction mappings, his later work on emotional design corrects this reductive early view. Many other innovations, and broadening of remit, has occured in HCD and UCD since. This includes cognitive science, psychology and social factors, emotional, brand, sentiment and many more complete and holistic human factors taken into consideration in the HCD process. Many, many large, medium and small companies utilise an HCD approach across an array of design fields, and include emotional considerations into the mix.

Tbh, even if you could just sketch a design and just let It come out of your printer, you would still need to be an engineer just to have the printer work, cuz let's be honest, printers are evil incarnate
