I always felt like ice users/cryomancers were fairly common in fighting games, as in one per series. They're not littered on the roster, but you can usually find one in every fighting game series that has multiple games, excluding a few key ones like Dead or Alive.
@BainesMkII6 жыл бұрын
Yes, while fire seems most common, ice doesn't seem horribly rare when compared to other elements. Is ice, for example, really less common that water or earth? Mortal Kombat, Darkstalkers, and Killer Instinct all had ice characters in their first titles. Samurai Shodown added an ice character in its third game. That's off the top of my head.
@thelastgogeta6 жыл бұрын
Smash Bros had Ice Climbers in the second game and actually had two users with the addition of Lucas in Brawl (both able to freeze you) but the latest game (excluding Smash Switch) had no ice users at launch without items or custom moves. Lucas did come back as DLC though. It is definitely "common" but not in the sense that you'd expect to see 4 or 5 users of it in a roster.

SYSTEMA is her fighting style!!! I didn't know that at all! Blew my mind and all the sample footage to compare to made me like her even more than before. Obvious defining *ahem* "ASSETS" to her aesthetic design aside. I loved Kolin's addition to SFV because of how blown away I was when they revealed that she was Gill's "secretary" from SF3 the whole time! I had my suspicions, but they did well to reserve her involvement in the plot by keeping her on the wayside and away from any fighting. The reveal also made me happy to know that she was not forgotten and that they had wanted her to be playable from the beginning, plus the addition of her secretary outfit as a playable costume was the icing on the cake and the other battle outfit was the strawberries on top. Overall, I agree, her demeanor, her loyalty to Gill, her ASSthethiccs, costumes, deep role in the main story, fighting style and ice powers, easily made her one of my most favorite SF characters of all time.

@Kriss_ch.6 жыл бұрын
Kolin's definitely one of my favorites in SFV just looks-wise. She's pretty in an unconventional way - You don't get a lot of that nose in FGs, and thigh gap aside it's all in her shapes. Combined with that simple color scheme and the really good hair for once, it's hard not to like her. It's nice to get a bit more Illuminati in that roster too. I feel like we started with the best, here, though there are some strong contenders when it comes to animation later on. As grotesque as Abigail's physique is, dude moves hilariously, and both Zeku and Menat are some solid opponents for that animation throne. You got any thoughts on Kolin's influences? I feel like she's got a lot of Matael from Galaxy Express 999 in her, and although that could just be a coincidence, I could totally see the designers going back to old shows/manga to ground new characters in to keep that old SF look going(and keep up the tradition of cribbing from manga). Zeku too has this strong retro vibe to him, though I can't point to any specific designs he's ripping off. Anyway, nice video. I'm glad we're doing these SFV designs again. I never knew their take on systema was this accurate.
@mikejonesnoreally6 жыл бұрын
It may sound weird but I think part of her character is inspired by Ayn Rand. (Such as her obvious flight from a Communist catastrophe and the way she feels surrounded by conspiracy and incompetence, her mistrust of power structures other than hers etc.) It also sounds like she's had a hard life and has made being frequently misunderstood work to her advantage rather than having it crush her. (another parallel to the refugee author.) Also, ask anyone who has studied Ms. Rand or Objectivism and they will tell you that no one is more deserving of the term "Ice Queen" who, if she were to take direction from anyone, they'd better have legit *God* like powers and would have to give her some first. Finally, her disdain for her fellow man is the stuff of legend and there were few she wouldn't treat as if they were beneath her and worthy only to be used as tools. It would be oddly deep if they metaphorically did that with a Fighting Game character but also really freakin' cool!

@@mikejonesnoreally Though that IS just a theory, I find it hilarious how they (crapcom) can have so many layers to their character designs, and yet completely drop the ball when telling a good story.
@mikejonesnoreally5 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right, that *is* just a crazy theory of mine, but it fits *soooo* well. Just like my theory that Capcom came up with Abigail while listening to Queens "I'm in love with my car." If you play Abigail while listening to poor Roger's underrated Opus, you suddenly realize that you have found the perfect "time" to play Abigail in. 4/8. A bit of a waltz with a *very sudden* staccato! My theory becomes even more apparent when you recall that Kolin can't *really* hurt you until you attack her. Just like Ms. Rand! I feel the story is one part of a videogame that I am most forgiving with, because they are so hard to write well. When approached to write the Movie, they even approached a *comedic* writer because that *was* Capcom's approach. Lean in to your own absurdity. While I love it, I get that the story has come from *many* sources some of which (the kids cartoon) I simply pretend don't exist, others that even some may not know of (the "stable" storyline from the tabletop RPG) however, many of us have written into our own "head cannon." Then again, I speak of Objectivity, but have to admit that my own view is Subjective and *only* my opinion. How much my own opinion? I think that the SFV story was genius, enjoyed it thoroughly, and am *really* looking forward to seeing what happens with Karin and Rashid in the future. I feel like SF2V (the animated series) tried to share with us slices of life from differing cultures and share some spiritual insights about martial arts, all while using the *best* tour guide! Ms. Chun-Li! Really though it's completely valid to say that I love these stories because I have a confirmation bias the size of a Trump logo when it comes to these games! xD I mean if you ask *me* (an' no one really does) I would say the best video game story ever written was either Teen Titans or Aeon Flux, depending on just *how* existential you wanna' get! If we're talking Civics, then it's definitely Invisible War, the game that *honestly* introduced *most* of us to transhumanism. I find story in games, Mc_Zittrer is like the story in comics, it's not obvious, but it is about 80% subversive and usually if done by a clever writer, they have put something there for you to at least take from it. So, thanks to them really! :D

Kolin is one of the better new characters in 5, mainly because actual thought and joy was put into her over all. @ddranimestyle6 жыл бұрын
Akuma is pretty solid. His H Tatsu and VTrigger DP are particularly very satisfying to land. My main gripe with him is the animation for his Shun Goku Satsu, though honestly it's all stylistic. I actually prefer the one in the teaser trailer for Akuma where all you saw was the red flash of his eye moving about. It was all mysterious and shit. Still better than SFIV's iteration of Raging Demon though, where Akuma grabs the opponent and then stops the whole game for 3 seconds just to yell something, when characteristically he used to be a character of few words. Compare that to the old games where it was just grab, lights out, death. No dramatic cutscenes or anything, and the speed at which it happens capitalizes just how deadly the move is. But again, that's all choreo and theming, not animations.

But, one thing about characters changing when they first appeared in Story and after as playable, there was Tanya case in MK X. They changed her skin and eyes, and I think a bit of her face too, but I'm not sure. It was pretty weird to see her in Story mode as she was before her debut in the real game. And for ice characters, we had Frost in MK, we also had Cyber Sub-Zero, so yeah, MK sure likes their cold characters. I think there were some to Samurai Shodown too. And, we should not forget DC's Killer Frost and Captain Cold, hahah! Probably not gonna happen, but it would be cool if you could make an episode about Eternal Champions one day.
