Wonderfully detailed explanation, Art, thank you. Ironically I’m also a software engineer and about 5 years ago I caught the same kinetic art bug...it’s a challenge to keep my mind on the job when all I want to do is be in my shed doing projects like this. Really awesome work, cleverly designed, and much appreciated for helping the rest of us. cheers, Ian

Very nice design you have here. Hope to be able to purchase another of your amazing Software Packages. Still using your Infamous Mach 3 and still after more than a Decade and almost 2, learning to make it work for me. Finally got back to my favorite past time designing Clock Trains. Hope you keep at and keep putting out Great Engineering Examples for those of us who love to tinker.

A video on the bat would be awesome. I've built a couple David C. Roy like sculptures over the years but none ran as smoothly as his do and definitely didn't look as nice. Thank you for sharing this video with us and I look forward to future videos on the subject.

Thank you really much for your detailled explanations. Me, as a office guy could understand the first time, what a ticker is an how it works, Although my grandgrandfather was a German black forest clock manufacturer back in 1908. His pendellum masterpiece clock is still ticking behind us. The video catched my mind to build my own ticker,. maybe i try.

Thank you for posting your creation. I have had an interest in kinetic art for years and have been frustrated by the lack of open source material online. You have inspired me to just dive in and don't fear the unknown. Understanding the vital basics of the movement is the push I needed. Thanks again for you're time, and please explain the "Bat" mech if you ever get a chance!!!

Hey Art, just recently found this video, found it inspirational and purchased Gearotic. Love the program so far. I just started designing my first ticker.... hopefully, there will be many more to come. I'd love to see the Bat video if you can still make a video for that one. Thanks again...

Hi Jeff, I havent as yet made one for the bat, though I may by end of summer show a video on its parts and how to design one.

You probably won’t see this message, but thank you a lot. I’ve been thinking about a way to design a mouse trap car with an escapement mechanism similar to the ones in kinetic sculpture art. This really helped putting it into a better perspective.

Hi Arthur, This is such a neat project. I’ve sent your video to some other KZbinrs that I’m sure will also get a kick out of this. I was able to open the .dxf files. I was not able to open the PDF files but I’m pretty sure that’s a computer issue on my end. Thanks for sharing so many cool videos! - Bill J.

I'm not sure why the link is not listed in the description. Good Luck! BTW, I'm trying to find a wood worker to build a wind powered rolling ball sculpture that I have a video of if you are interested. I just want to see my updated version built by someone. I have always wanted to see this explanation showing the works of the ticker. Great job. I just wonder if these kenetic sculptures could designed and built without a computer/cad program? Art - What kind of laser cutter are you running in your workspace? Is it a specific brand you recommend? Are you pleased with the cutting it does?

I have a 10 watt , a 40 watt, both cartesian, and a 50 watt galvo , each has its use. I generally like lasers a lot.. :)
@artofcuret5 жыл бұрын
@@ArtofCNC Did you build your laser cutters yourself or did you purchase them? If purchased, what brand of machine? Sorry to be nosey but I am seeking a 40 watt cutter for my own shop so I am asking people in the know.

@@artofcuret I bought a mornstar 40 watt long ago , it works well. The other two I built from Ebay parts. If youve never had one, Id try one of the cheaper K40 type lasers, they work fairly well really...

What are the steps to get this in PDF format? Like 1:1 paper template to use a band saw or a scroll saw? I went to gearotic and download the zip for Scimatar but nothing on my computer will open it so I can print everything I need. Thank you in advance
@ArtofCNC6 жыл бұрын
You might try AutoSkecth, it should load the dxf's, and output in different formats. If you install Gearotic the Program Vexx will load the dxf's and output them as svg's, that may help in printing them.

@jimpriest55727 жыл бұрын
Art, I have downloaded the files you provided (Thank you for that) and am at the stage of assembly. Throughout the video, you point out the use of ball bearings...Further, you mentioned you use 1/4 inch brass rod for the arbors, so I'm assuming I need to source several 1/4 ID x 1/2 OD flanged bearings. Are other sizes needed?
@ArtofCNC7 жыл бұрын
Jim, no that should do you. I buy mine on ebay 50 at a time, when they show up. I used that size because I got them cheap so dont feel married to that size. Also, soak them in a solvent so they get real loose and fast.. makes it run longer.
@jimpriest55727 жыл бұрын
Go to gearotic.com/ESW/FavIcons/index.php?topic=908.0 Once on this page look carefully for SCIMTAR.zip. The text is small and sits just below a thin dividing line beneath and to the left under the first entry block on that page.

@ArtofCNC7 жыл бұрын
Hi: I used a 4lb spring, but I just hapened to have one that size.. I suspect the design will work with any reasonable size spring..
@aleXelaMec7 жыл бұрын
hm... i need to make spring which will rotate the rod veeery slow and for minutes.
@ArtofCNC7 жыл бұрын
To rotate very slow, youd need a large mass for the vanes to raise their intertial moment. The spring I used was from Vulcan Springs, you can check their specs for power vs thickness of stell..etc.. Ive never made a spring from scratch. I suspect Trial and error is the way to go..
