As a beginner dev. "Fun before it's pretty" is one of the most simple but meaningful advice I've heard. I used to think about how cool my game should look on the beginning of development. Now it has changed, thank you.
@TheBackstreetNets4 жыл бұрын
I played your previous build and for me the most annoying part was the rail grinding. Currently, if Gabriella hits a rail side-on, she often goes backwards. I think the mechanic would be a lot more reliable if she grinded in the direction the camera was facing rather than the direction she's facing, with a 30 degree threshold for facing directly backwards or something. Apart from that, Keep up the great work! Looking forward to seeing even more builds.

The design of the game is fenomenal and you clearly know how to design a level. The only thing that's lacking is feedback: when you kill an enemy, it just disappears, and when you mid-air boost, you get some strange hop. All the rest is very solid

May I give some suggestions? - What about small booster tiles where gabbie can walk on, similar to what you see in Mario Kart/ Sonic games? That way the player can go really fast and be incentivized to do speedruns even more for a level. - Someone else already said this in the comments: Maybe you could add an additional animation for the mid-air dash, like a boost coming for her jet-boots? That is also an intuitive way for the player to learn that doing a mid-air jump propels you forward. - Small challenges/goals the player can complete in-level: For example, the player needs to collect three of the same items to unlock another route, or what about a round stairway-like tower but with rails? - Going on the same vibe that Gabbie is just chilling on a crane: Gabbie can 'hike on' to moving objects, e.g. a subway train. - The player can maybe equip items before starting a level that gives them a boost, which can be in many ways. The type of boost they want to buy can be bought with in-game coins the collect from levels. - You have played up her cyborg side in an amazing way, I really like her design! Maybe you can do something with her cat-like side too? What ways can she use her (extra) ears, tail to progress a level? Just some suggestions, but feel free to ignore! I am really excited every time you drop a video. You inspire me to make my own games.

All of your anims look good alone but I'd recommend a couple of things that I think would help them in game. 1: animate a jump assuming the skating pose as it's base. This is a little complicated as you'd not only have to animate a jump from whichever foot is currently carrying your characters weight but also implement code to define that and play the correct animation. 2: For something needing to be very responsive such as a jump, don't begin the anim in the pose already held such as the idle, that pose has already been established by the time the player has chosen to jump, instead begin in the wind up pose that gives power to the jump. Does that make sense? Great work and good luck going forward.

@xillia39884 жыл бұрын
Hey Raymond! I have some great ideas for you now that you're getting more howned into your project the first is: Look into classic sonic games, like sonic 3 and knuckles. They fundamentally have the same idea as your project feline. Sonic him self is simple. Roll, jump and spin dash. Now if he went fast all the time it would be boring, so maybe you can achieve what the classics did for design in ideas. Precise movments, fun platforming or great enemy placements and level design, then has speed sections. In your case, maybe it could be a nice, well made section of wall jumping with multiple ways to approach, and put your self in a better spot like maybe if you go high in a certain way, you can reach a floor higher and have less enemies, or have holes to the bottom floor, but if you can maneuver well, you'll get rewarded with goodies or a better time over all since there not much going vertical. As I mentioned,sonic does that great level design where if you're good enough you can take the top side and get rewarded with goodies, and lower sections have more enemies and things to climb and pit falls.I like how you're adding different things into the level where you can take short cuts, it's great! As for attacking, same idea as sonic. The attacking is also you're movement options. Keeps the gaming going and makes the game centric on speed and movement. I like the dash being an attack, makes the game really centric on it. For animation, I also like the idea of her legs actually shoot air, or kinda fires to propell her forward or where ever she's going sounds cool to me. And maybe a strong key pose while shes dashing. Other than that, I've been following since the first episode and I really enjoy it. Now that I'm Seeing the game is much more focused and level design is coming in, I decided to finally comment an idea. Hope this helps, and if it doesn't, then that's okay! Just felt like I should chip in. Keep her going Raymond!

Looking good! What I personally feel will bring up the speeed is just the basic running animation. She needs more power in her ride or it seems too lax for what I feel youre trying to go for.

For pacing add some more simple things like jumping from pillar to pillar so it's not all running only and things like stopping to move over a egde and walking across ledges can help you alote also maybe swinging from pole to pole it could definitely help you go from a fast pace obstacle to a more of a slower one as a breather. Make sure the bretaher isn't to long or the players excitement will run out. Try looking at how mirrors edge paces their game to give a sort of breather to the players every few minutes or so

Some of the grinding snaps and the errant wallride magnet boosts from the actionblocks demo weren't apparent in this demo, but serious wallride problems remain. I've noticed that sometimes wallrides activate unintentionally because all you need to do is slam into a wall, sometimes in invalid ways. Like feet not touching a wall, or having no forward momentum but the magnet still sticks you against the wall till the physics bump you out. Just a lot of weird running, and since there's no tilt to the character I can't really say what I'm running on. Launches off the wall feel much more controllable now, I think there's more of a kick-away and it helps. Lots of parts of this demo were frustrating level design - the checkpoints felt like they were in the wrong places, like putting the hardest part at the end. They didn't seem to enclose thematically-related zones either. The most irritating to me was a checkpoint right before a set of three grind rails, two of which I ignored because wallride is easier, then an easy but time-consuming climb, and then platforms suspended in mid-air. But wait! I don't know the air-dash key, and it's not mappable in-game. So I have to rely on jump-kick(?) to try and cross the air-dash section, which is extremely hard. The next checkpoint appears to be several hops into this section and I just wound up quitting out. So this seems like a combination of checkpoint starvation and bad on-boarding. The game should teach you how to air-dash long, long before it drops you into a pit for the cause.

Have you considered default mappings of Jump and crouch to the Right Bumper and Left Bumper respectively? Controls like that by default I think would work better with how the game is, considering you'd want the camera to be controlled by the player as they are performing actions like jumping and platforming. With A and B, it's pretty much a disconnect between doing those actions and controlling the camera
@lunarmagpie43054 жыл бұрын
I think the dash should be triggered by the shift key like every other game. Pressing space makes it feel like a double jump so the player might not realize that they can change their directional velocity.
