idk what it is but i love those retro futurism designs all scifis had for robots, they look so clunky and yet endearing.

Very nice design work. That costume must not have been very comfortable to wear! The actor must have been pretty tall. Looking forward to seeing your progress on this cool project!

Your previous builds have given you all sorts of skills that you are now leveraging to a very efficient and effective workflow. I bet it's much more enjoyable than the early days of constant head scratching. So cool to see those old B movie robots come to life. Whatever you do, don't look up the early B&W series of Dr Who. There are so many cool looking robots in those that you will be going forever. Tell you one that the kids love. It's the one from the video game " Ratchet and Clank" there seem to be very few toys of that one about. Possibly small sound chips are what would give that sort of thing more play-a-bility. possibly a teaching aid as well.

I whish that was true. Every project is different and full of head scratching.

I think I can say with some confidence, the original robot is made of light weight metal ducting. Most of it seems to be limited to the type of forms that would be typically fabricated by a workshop specialized in that field.

I’ve a suspicion the first shoulder joint in the costume is actually the elbow of the actor inside and the forearms are handheld within the second joint, as it explains the right-angle shoulder and the odd proportions. Comfy! Lovely idea with the LED eyes, might I suggest warm-white diffused, if you have any.

I have white flashing LEDs on hand so will just use them. I wanted warm white and non flashing, but sometimes you just have to use what you have on hand.

Looks perfect. Only thing I noticed in the stills, the foot does not extend much past the back of the leg, but I can see for stability why you did that. I may just paint out that part in flat black. Still working on Chani. This will definitely be my next one.
@Robothut
@Robothut 13 күн бұрын
Yes, the feet almost always have to be modified to functionally work as a simple toy, otherwise you would need a small person with good balance inside. Active balancing and servo control is a option but it is not a simple 3d printed toy at that point and most builders would not be able to make one.

Nice design process. Do you have standard CAD or STL models built of the TT motor with single or double ended drive shaft so you can drop them into the CAD model to make sure that the fit and clearances are good?

I just use the mechanical dimensions drawing you can find online. A drop in file would be great to have.

Hey question, where do you get the motors etc from? I printed both Gog and Chandi robots however I have not been able to find the motors for those?

I'm slightly surprised there's no color promo stills from the movie online anywhere. There usually are a few, even for old B&W movies. Annoying.

Yes, I agree. That was the first thing I went hunting for. But in low budget movies back in the 1950's color promo shots would have been a extra expense I guess.
