I subscribed to HBO Max for this show, and my money was well spent, as seen with this production. I was unfamiliar with this time period, and it has been marvelous to get acquainted with this time in the United States. Well, Bridgerton is set in the beginning of the 1800s, in the regency era that takes place between 1813 and 1827, and The Gilded Age takes place between 1865 and 1901, so it's two very different periods and I think both of the shows (to have seen both of them) have their own charms and both the costumes of these shows are incredible, wether it's with the colors, the fabrics or the stories they tell, I think they're both terrifically gorgeous ahah !

I just love this show, it’s so perfectly well done. I’ll be so sad to have to wait for season 2, my Monday nights have been such a thrill. As a theater design and costume designer, this production has everything that it could have to make me drool. I wish I was working on this production, in any capacity. The costumes are so beautiful and the colors are so rich, Bertha does have some magnificent gowns , but everyone is dressed to the nines and only the servants are ever seen wearing the same outfit. I love how the women make wearing a bustle look so graceful and they flow in a light aired fashion which is not how I imagined them from looking at period designs. The scenery is out of this world and I just am amazed at every shot. The most significant part of this series has to be the storyline, it tells a story of a time in American history that has basically been lost. There’s a rich and vivid story of Black Americans that really needed to be seen, and I appreciate the way the storyline melds together fact and fiction and characters that cross in and out of each other’s storyline so flawlessly. These characters are well thought out fully developed and you really get to know their feelings and emotions. I can’t wait for more of the Gilded Age as it is truly a delight and has taken my mind off of current issues.

It’s cool. I’m a Native American and I still appreciate the show. My ancestors were fighting against railroads and our land was being invaded by gold diggers illegally coming onto our land and killing us and stealing our gold in the Black Hills. The gold taken from our land saved the American economy at the time. The show is light and fun , so I don’t care about the political climate and racism towards my ppl at the time. They really don’t show that part and only mention the battle of the little big horn once in a joke.

Ah how I wish these behind the scene featurettes were more like 2-hour documentaries. I'd absolutely watch an in-depth look at the historical research, design and production behind the costumes. I want to know all on how they decided on the different styles for each character, especially in this production the costumes are a story of their own - they tell so much while still remaining mostly period-appropriate. Bertha's costumes are a hit or miss and I think that was deliberate. Agnes always looks pretty similar, even her ballgown was like a bejeweled version of what she regularly wears, and it works as she's opposed to new things. Ada looks both weird and classy. Peggy looks elegant, stylish but more understated, her looks were consistently good. Loved Mrs. Chamberlain's and Aurora's clothes... everything reflects their personalities so well. I think it's interesting they say that the men look 'classic' when you have Oscar randomly dressed like a steampunk Elton John every other scene and it absolutely works. He is in desperate need of a better hairstyle though, it's so unnatural looking.

they filmed quite a few bits down the street and around the corner from my house and that was really cool. a lot of the architecture in my city is from that era so there was no need for much building or visual effects aside from the dirt road, they buried our roads and the big building they lit up in the lighting ceremony and Lady Libertys hand were CGI. I took lots of pics of the sets when we were allowed to walk around them.

As talented as the cast is, I would have cut it in half to allow more time for character exploration and development. The Gilded Age feels like a vast and expensive cocktail party, whereas Downtown feels like wine and cheese with 5 of your best friends. TGA can be fun, with lots to see and take in (the sights the people etc), but you don’t leave feeling like you really know anyone.

Yes! But it is set in the USA 🇺🇸 So there is a British commentary on Americans and their fast relationships and ease with strangers.
@brooks121972 жыл бұрын
@@jesseleeward2359 hmm.. that’s interesting. Maybe I’m just a strange American for feeling the way I do then? Haha. I suppose I just wish they could portray that cultural observation/interpretation without sacrificing the viewer’s relationship to the characters. Your takeaway is a good one, and I feel they could have had so much more fun with that concept then they did. And I would have had more fun as a result lol! Play with our emotions! Make us feel what the characters are feeling, despite our better knowledge and social awareness! Make me FEEL the fear that “old New York” feels toward “new money”. Then make me hate myself for empathizing with those people lol! Then do the same thing across the street at the Russell’s home. Make me want to social climb! Make me feel the desperation and importance. Don’t just assume that I’ll feel it’s important because the character acts like it is. What was mrs. Russell’s experience like growing up poor at the time she did? How was her family treated by those at the top? Why should I root for her? Tell me by making me feel something. Downton made the viewer feel so much, right from the start. It’s crazy to be feeling so much sorrow and empathy and compassion for Mary and her situation, given her immense privilege and general behavior. But you just can’t help it. Then, next thing you know, you can’t stand her. It’s brilliant. She is privileged, entitled, snobbish, cold and biting one moment. The next moment, she is a strong-minded, intelligent and passionate young woman, living in the stiflingly oppressive and patriarchal Edwardian era. She cannot inherit, solely because she is a woman. The injustice and rage is passed on to the viewer so seamlessly, that it feels almost instinctual. And this humanizes Mary. And all of the characters are humanized in a similar organic way, even the more minor ones. But I will give TGA time to mature, and am looking forward to season 2. :)
@brooks121972 жыл бұрын
@@jesseleeward2359 Also, which Americans do they interpret as being welcoming of strangers. While Americans could ascend the social ranks far more easily than their British counterparts, I’m not sure that made them welcoming and unsuspecting of outsiders. I do think this show illustrates that in the US, all one really needs to move to the top of “society” is lots of money, determination, and at least one important name (which usually comes with extreme wealth). In Britain, all one had to do was be born. Or be born and then get married, I suppose lol.
@MikeA152062 жыл бұрын
Jullian was burned in Downtown using a smaller cast when it succeeded and many actors wanted to leave the show. This way if actors leave, there is still room for story development.
@brooks121972 жыл бұрын
@@MikeA15206 That’s a risky trade-off. Having an excess of cast members won’t help you if one of the leading roles decides to leave. You can always write new characters in if need be. And I don’t think Julian got burned by anyone other than Dan Stevens, really. Jessica was a loss, but it ended up working beautifully and tragically into the story. Matthew’s departure didn’t work as well. But that comes with the territory of the Entertainment industry. Often times, people will want to move on, sooner or later. I don’t think one should heavily pad their cast in preparation for a characters yet-to-be-determined departure. It’s not the army after all. Unless you can do all of those characters justice and use them all well, you’re probably best using only what you need to tell the story. Which leads me to my actual issue, which is not so much the number of characters, but the number of stories. Far too many for so few episodes, to the extent that I didn’t really care, as they were poorly executed or left unexplored. A suicide early on was a major opportunity for character building and making your audience feel something. Unfortunately, we didn’t really get to see the family grieve. A minute of the widow being petty at a Red Cross event, and that’s it? So many more examples, but again this is only my opinion. I wanted to love it, but I didn’t. I thought it was just okay. But I remain hopeful for season 2.
