A lot of people have things they would've done differently back then now if they had the chance. But we don't. That's why we have to remember and make sure it doesn't happen again, but if people don't give you the space to grow, why would anyone bother to change? People should be getting positive encouragement to change, not getting beat down. Why bother changing if you're going to get the same negative response anyway.

I think an even bigger problem here is that the teenage twitter mobs insist on judging past actions and jokes against the standards of today. I would make the argument that a lot of the stuff people did that they're getting cancelled for (sexual assault or any violence notwithstanding) does not reflect on their character in any way, because they did that stuff when it was socially acceptable, and so I don't know that I would even agree that "learning and growing" is a thing in this context. A person can have behaved in a socially acceptable way all the time, it's just that what's acceptable has changed. You can argue that X was always wrong, but we only do that against the background we have today. I'm not even that old and even I remember a time 15 years ago when painting your face brown in order to dress up like a black celebrity (not blackface in the sense of minstrel shows, k) was not something people got upset over. That is not to invalidate people taking offence at things like this today - the culture has changed now and people should act accordingly. But retroactively applying the current standards is trying to move the goal post for something that happened 10 years ago. And since comedy and parody in particular age like milk, in the entertainment industry, it's especially bs. "No punishment without law" is one of the basic human rights and founding legal principles, yet apparently the concept in everyday life has escaped some people.

The second I saw that "A Message" video pop up I knew basically what it was going to be... leaving KZbin. In the two months leading up to it, you hear more and more from her during her videos about her being exhausted and kind of not knowing what to do in the next video and the next, etc. I don't think people bringing up those old videos was THE reason she left or just an excuse for her, I think it was more like the straw that broke the camel's back. She already just wasn't feeling it for various reasons and probably needed a long break. Then that shit hit the fan (it wasn't even actual black face, she used to go hella hard on that spray tan, but whatever) and it made her take a step back and maybe realize that KZbin just wasn't that fun for her anymore. 10 years of making weekly videos is a lot. It's a long time. She's in her mid 30's now and maybe it's just time for a new phase in Jenna's life. As we've seen, she's changed a hell of a lot since she started on KZbin. So maybe this was just a natural part of it all. I hate that the old videos are gone, but I completely understand the choice to do so. I really do think we need those videos to show how people grow and change especially from like 18-28 years old. I also heavily relate to that sort of transformation. I was very sheltered, very conservative, and low key racist when I was younger. Thank god I'm not anymore. Like Jenna, I'm damn proud of the changes I've made. Of course I wish I hadn't been like that in the first place, but you can't really help the way you were raised. I've seen younger people commenting about Jenna's old videos saying things that essentially boil down to "once a racist (or whatever), always a racist (or whatever)". That's simply not true. I've experienced this myself. It's extremely real. And it's extremely good that people can make such big changes early on in life. Seeing it happen in chronological order on a channel like Jenna's was pretty interesting. Also, wtf is up with that woman criticizing Jenna's "weight gain"? As if you cannot get fat off of food that is legit vegan. Bruh. Sugar is vegan. Along with many other unhealthy things... also, you can simply just eat a shit ton of things that are considered healthy but when you consume too many calories (without burning them off through exercise) long term, guess what... weight gain. Whether or not animal products are in what you're eating. Aaaand... when you hit 30, um... it's pretty common to put on weight more easily than you did in your early 20's. People who go vegan often hold on to healthier weights simply because they are really paying attention to what they're putting in their bodies. Not because a strict vegan diet is inherently healthier than anything else. We can see this by looking at some of the foods Julien makes in his cooking videos, lol!

Honestly, the KZbin platform and "internet culture" doesn't quite allow for authentic KZbinrs to exist anymore. First, the algorithm benefits a very special kind of content, so, if you want to make money, you're going to adapt your videos as to fit the standards on what is profitable, which may cause a loss of authenticity. Secondly, "internet culture" forces individuals to adhere to what is socially acceptable. Not everyone has grown up with the same awareness and the same values. Not everyone may agree on certain topics, especially delicate ones. We can't force everyone tho think the "correct" way and also expect authenticity from them.

Yeah, basically it'll create stagnation where new people cannot grow yet people will complain about older/popular people not being "innovative". Like how can innovation prosper when a select amount of people refuse to admit their mindset is very one-note and want everybody to fit this small mold of opinions and perspectives. Then claim they're "progressive" or "liberal" when what they're doing is conservative/authoritarian with a different coat of paint. We cannot grow when there's a "wrong" way to think. I am not talking about CLEAR evil shit I'm talking about just having the ability to say no to what's presented now as "right" doesn't mean you're "evil" it's like not everybody is gonna agree. Yet that is why their logic tries to twist everything is tied to "oppressing" so refusing is tied to hurting somebody. It just sucks and ironic from people that "what to keep it real" more like they refuse to be real themselves.

Please understand I'm not saying those are ok, but it was definitely super common for popular youtubers to be making race jokes and their followers would receive it well. The same goes for comedians at the time. As the culture started circulating other perspectives that made it clear that that type of humor caused real harm, our norms about humor started changing. You can see this in real time on youtubers' accounts like jenna marbles or nigahiga. Jokes they used to make, they don't make anymore. People and cultures grow and change. It’s an interesting distinction between Jenna deleting her videos as a rejection of her past content, while other creators are seemingly trying to remove evidence of content that could harm their careers. Edit: also, love the video; a great and thoughtful discussion!
@genesisp38844 жыл бұрын
No, they are deleting their old videos because people don't know how to watch the full picture and accept people's growth. They are trying to avoid being attacked like Jenna was. Jenna should not have had to leave but the internet broke her. They literally destroyed her will to be a KZbinr. This is how society has devolved.

@@genesisp3884 Bruv a part of growth can absolutely be acknowledging that old videos contain views that you no longer stand by and you can see the harm they do/have caused people and then removing them. I've deleted old social media for less, why can't someone with a big audience reflect and go "actually, I don't want anyone else to see this". Also sorry but society doesn't "devolve" by people acknowledging that racism (and other shitty things) hurts people and taking steps to reduce the amount of it out there. Jenna's video was an incredibly mature cap to a long period of growth away from the person who made those videos, which DID hurt people at the time, and would have continued to hurt people who stumbled across them in the future.
@genesisp38844 жыл бұрын
@@merchantarthurn If you reread my comment you will see that I was countering the original comment's claim that other KZbinrs were trying to cover up their mistakes. I was explaining that these KZbinrs have to delete these videos because even though they have acknowledged that they were wrong, people will try to attack them anyway. Also, if you actually think about it, there is a lot of harm in attacking these KZbinrs for things that they have apologized for or obviously learned not to do as well. Personally, when I come across offensive things, I just ignore them and if they are too offensive, I stop watching content from that KZbinr. It's so simple. When I say that the internet has devolved, I mean that hordes of bullies have taken over the internet to bash people for mistakes that I am sure most of them have also made.

I hate the people who don't accept change, but if there's no obvious change (jenna definitely grew, for example, by being outspoken against the sorta stuff she used to casually be find with in videos, but people who used shit that wasn't okay even when they made their old videos line Shane Dawson etc... nah no excuse there) and they get called out for obviously shitty videos?? Joji was called out repeatedly. Throughout his career as Filthy Frank many people criticized his content. He just had thick skin, knew who his audience was, and ignored the criticism. Jenna obviously couldn't do that, given how she always chose to engage with people who criticized her, which isn't wrong, but meant she would eventually burn out if the hate got too much even if she still had her core audience. People have always said that in order to be an online personality you have to have thick skin, because you will inevitably get haters. I don't think anyone that got "cancelled" actually lost their core audience. Sure, their views take a dip for a while but that comes back pretty quickly. What generally happens is people get overwhelmed by the criticism they receive all at once and can't take it anymore, so they quit. They still have their audience, and would still be successful if they kept making videos, but they can't handle the criticism.

I'm 56 an I loved Jenna from the early days on. Super genuine, sweet lady that was always super inclusive and concerned with everyone's feelings. We're in a period of American history that wants to demonize people for doing things that weren't socially unacceptable at that point in time. When Jenna did the Micki Manage video she was being ridiculous and way over the top. Satire from decades ago does not, nor was it meant to be racist in any way. We've created a culture where trolls are licking their lips to discover something that can be used against celebrities and can end you tomorrow. UNLESS you go in front of the press and make a fake apology so you don't lose your livelihood. The public doesn't care that those people rarely mean it. It's the culture that pulls your pants down, spanks you , and then renews your show for another season. This was a sincere loving person who is just as fragile as those who wanted to hold her feet to the fire. I'm glad she stepped back because this hurt her a lot. I think she felt betrayed by fans that wanted to be shitty. And a spirit like Jenna doesn't get replaced or forgotten. All of this shows the black eye on society that is political correctness.

Im not gonna lie, I didn't like the Jenna of ten years ago. I thought of her as superficial and mean, I had seen a few of her videos but couldn't help but see negative things about them. However everyone liked her and I subscribed to her because she was one of the popular youtubers of the time. Over time I ended up forgetting about her but after awhile her content started becoming how it is *was* now and I rediscovered her again. What's wonderful about Jenna is that she's clearly bettering herself and genuinely trying her best to be a good mature person/role model. Some things don't need addressing, like Jenna's case. Clearly her maturity over time IS the apology. Her actions were enough and even more meaningful than some stereotypical apology video. I think people really need to start understanding that cancel culture is horrible and only fueled by people who just to watch others burn each other. Yes people need to be held accountable but part of taking accountability is giving time for said person to grow. To learn from their mistake and move on. This definitely isn't happening. Jenna was truly a gem on this platform and a wonderful role model, it's sad to see more toxicity taking more control. And ultimately her taking a step back was the right decision for her.

Dying, not dead. The loss of authenticity comes from peoples' recent complicated expectations with consequences they fail to imagine. They want people to be perfect with an unblemished past, and that is unrealistic. To achieve that, YT'ers are essentially erasing their pasts, removing what, through documented growth, engenders their perceived authenticity. Then, the people who wanted their model idols complain those idols are dull, unworthy, or just unforgivable. The desire to debase and deplatform people with a _subjectively_ questionable past is idiotic. Idiotic not only for the ridiculous expectations and methodologies, but also idiotic for those people to think they hold such agency over someone as to analyze their past and pass meaningful judgement. These people believe they hold some kind of divine power, and their judgements and opinions are of the most unquestionable esteem. It is literal insanity.

When something comes out about old content someone has created that is problematic I want to start to take the time and see their growth (if there is any). If I see the person hasn't grown and seems to just be constantly apologizing and not learning then I will cut them from my life. I discovered Jenna later into her career, I instantly became obsessed and started to watch her older videos. Around that time I was starting to explore my gender identity. I didn't know as much as I do now but I did know that I didn't fully align with the gender norms of a "man" but at the time saw myself as a man (also as of this point in my life my pronouns are he/they but who knows that may all change). And watching those older video of her saying "guys are like this, girls are like this" did make me feel weird and uncomfortable. But I knew that those were made at a different point in her life so I still supported her and loved her content. She always came across as someone who is aware she doesn't know everything and is actively trying to grow and learn because she genuinely cares about not wanting to hurt anyone or anything. A good example of that growth was seeing her on her podcast really trying to use more gender inclusive language when greeting the dink fam. Whereas we see KZbinrs on this platform who don't seem like they've grown at all, it becomes the same shit different day. They can apologize every single time but after a while "sorry" starts to mean nothing. Before discovering Jenna I had already cut Shane Dawson from my life. I could feel that his apologies were just for pr and not real, and that his newer content on youtube was more squeaky clean to not come across as problematic. On his podcast for example he would sort of talk about how he was polishing his content because he was "getting canceled every other month" showing he wasn't actually growing as a person. He was just learning to become disingenuous in order to not be "problematic". Thank you for this video and thank you for really bringing up this take on "cancel culture". Because I've been trying to grasp the idea of it all when it comes to youtubers and internet personalities in general and it all made no sense to me and was really stressing me out.

Well the thing was. She technically wasn’t canceled. But she was getting a ton of hate comments every video she posted for just stupid shit. @@meganclifton6781 they are saying that she knew taking accountability was the right thing to do. And also she knew she need to quit because it was draining her. I bet she is much happier now. You can tell with how Julian talks that she is in a better place.

If you canceled Jenna Marbles, you’re wrong no matter what your point is.

@@ameyas7726 Ah, but she was never in it for the money. she just wanted to make people happy, and it wasnt fair that she got so much backlash for what she did 10 years ago. she grew so much as a person after. yes, she did cancel herself, but it was because of the people that were offended by her videos from so long ago.

@@ameyas7726 This. Asking for an apology over something you've said, even if it was a decade ago, its not wrong. Its exemplary of your growth as a person. It was what i liked about Jenna, and what i disliked about other youtubers such as Shane Dawson. She was real, she was herself, and if she messed up she really got in and didn't try to hide it. Thats why her, privating videos in which she did questionable things was more of a coverup than a real solution to the problem. NOBODY wanted to "cancel" her, just to get out and say "yeah i did that, it was wrong, i'd never do it again and i did it because - at the time - i thought its okay" That is fine to ask of someone. I mean, i am nonbinary and i didn't care about not being mentioned. But making racist jokes is low key not okay, even for the time that was 10 years ago. This is just a respect thing and that is not too much to ask. :/ I just wish those people who have asked for a statement to these vids would've been nicer. Jenna has never been outright malicous in her intend, this is why i think they were too harsh.

I mean racism is a pretty good point to cancel someone.

Jenna didn't get cancelled, she cancelled herself. People who do get "cancelled" are just not acknowledged by the internet or plain out shunned. People want Jenna back, but she's completely stepped out of the spotlight willingly.

This is all very Black Mirror-ish. I started watching Jenna in 2013 and the woman we watched back then was very different from 2020 Jenna. It’s a shame she left and I hope she has found well being.
