Great project and great design. I worry that some comments on here may influence folks who are new to embroidery to be reluctant to do this project. I have a single needle machine and have done just a few mug rug designs in the hoop by Designs by JuJu. Those other projects have more steps than this one - yet they were not overwhelming and straightforward. These are NOT HARD and ok for a newbie! Instructions are good and clear. I have real world experience with this and was very intimidated at first...but once I did it, it was doable and satisfying! I have also done Mug Rugs that are sewn on a sewing machine after I did any embroidery on the fabric separately and those are multi-step also. It all depends on what you are looking for in my opinion. If you want step-by-step instructions to get your feet wet and gain experience on these in-the-hoop projects, I found this company's projects good for that. I think this is a great one to start with for those considering embarking on the 'in the hoop' journey, as it is cute, customizable, straightforward, and FREE. You really can use small amount of fabric you have lying around for this project. Thanks for the free design.

Love the freebie but 32 colors changes on a single needle is just too much. when i get a multi needle (when I win the lottery) I will make this lovely mug rug!

The first 20 are just for tack downs. Sounds like she used 12 colors.

32 stops for a mug rug does Stern a little extreme, but it is cute...

All five team members who stitched samples before release used a single needle machine :) There are 32 colorstops, but you do NOT have to change your thread 32 times. For over half of the steps you can use the same neutral thread color. The colorstops are to force your machine to stop and let you do all the fabric placement and tackdown steps. A multineedle would only save a bit of time as the little embroidered cup stitches out. You should give this freebie a try!
